I guess we may well also ask the question as to why DJ aircraft are painted red. I am sure the answers are related in some way  .
Why are DJ aircraft painted red :?: Virgin Blue :?

I always thought it was an allusion to the habit of nicknaming redheaded people "Bluey".

Cheers.

Correct! I recall reading this in DJ's onboard magazine, Voyeur. The planes are painted red because red is the Virgin corporate colour, and the "Blue" was used because it was considered Australian, i.e. nicknaming red-heads "bluey".

Edit - so does IATA just randomly allocate the codes? I'm wondering why they have DJ too. Why not use V with something else?

Not random. I am not sure if the airline makes a specific request for an unused code of if they are just allocated.

But the number of available 2-letter codes is low, so there may not have been anything meaningful available starting with V anyway.

Perhaps the saw the DJ department stores as the underdog in the retail wars and thought they could gain some kudos from being made out as the underdog in the travel wars?
