Well, the first hint of the new blue has hit the skies: A complimentary amenities pack for domestic premium!

Well, if this is the first salvo for 2011, DJ giving us more is a step in the right direction IMO! (As QF continues to take away, e.g. with the latest loss - the domestic business side salad.)

If this is a hint at the slick new corporate colour scheme, that they are planning on implementing, then I think it's a step in the right direction.

While QF doesn't offer amenities packs to domestic business passengers (but they do have a nice blanket & pillow), the contents are quite similar to what JQ stocks in its "comfort pack" (the blanket is almost the same in terms of size and fabric consistency, but the blow up pillow is rectangular rather than a neck roll).

When you say complimentary, do you get to keep the pillow and blanket? :p

Also, was this given on a specifically red-eye flight, or is this to be expected even in the day? Looks good, interesting colour scheme.

Looks good.

Do you think that we might be able to guess the livery (from these colours) that will be going on the white plane that DJ took delivery of recently??????

I would say that this is the first salvo fired from the DJ camp.

Game on and definitely more to come!

Qantas already offers a more premium offering to this. In domestic J, they have international J pillows and blankets. Y passengers also have pillows and blankets available to them, same as those seen on international services.

Ear plugs are available to all passengers on request, and in J on 'red-eye' services from Perth an amenities pack is offered with eye-shades, toothbrush/paste, and socks also available.

I think that your missing the point 737.

QF have had a J class for a while now, DJ are just about to introduce one.

I think 737 was referring to the OP saying that QF don't offer an amenitity kit in J, which they do.

But the OP did mention/acknowledge the QF pillow and blanket. So if it was about the QF amenity kit I'm not sure of the point of mention that in detail. Personally the blanket and pillow does nothing more than take up valuable space on the aircraft.

Well the aircraft has to have blankets anyway (in fact the blankets are that important that the aircraft will be held indefinitely until there are a minimum number onboard. Not even broken IFE, ovens, or lack of catering can delay an aircraft like blankets - they are even part of the aircraft minimum equipment list)

So may as well be the nice ones!

I have to say the colour scheme and slogans etc are a bit ...VS:rolleyes:

Next it will be light projected onto cut glass sculpture where the overhead screen used to be;)

Required or not, nice or not. It doesn't change the situation that the blankets take up valuable space on a large number of flights. I have never felt the need for a blanket on any flights between ADL, BNE, MEL and SYD

Sounds like they are considered safety equipment in this case? Fire fighting qualities possibly?

For what Qantas charge for domestic business class they can certainly afford to provide these items.

Most routes, ie Sydney Melbourne are in excess of $500 one way, and the Perth to East Coast flights are in excess of $1300 one way.

At the moment there is no competition in the Domestic Business market but hopefully that will change if DJ can put in place a premium service. DJ needs to do this for their partner airlines so as their customers have a premium service to use in Australia.

If DJ are successful QF will have to reduce prices and improve their FF program.

I didn't know this. Thanks for the info!

It is highly unlikely they are there for fire fighting, key thing with fire is to be quick. How quick is it going to be to search 2 or 3 overhead lockers to find a blanket underneath everyone's carry on bags?

Those blankets would probably fuel fire, rather than fight it. We have BCF extinguishers for that, which are banned in most countries however are allowed for airline use given their ability to fight fire in a timely manner in a confined space.

Blankets (of which there must be a minimum of 20 onboard) are used in case of a bomb onboard.

Interesting. Not that I'm questioning you but how would blankets be used in such a scenario?
I was pondering the same. I guessed at a couple of ideas. Maybe they can be used to compartmentise the cabin to impede the dispersion of gases and shock wave. I'm not sure how this would be achieved in practice.

Otherwise, Maybe they could be used as a makeshift "dampener" (not sure of the proper word) to try to contain an explosion to limit its effectiveness. My guess is based on the number required as probably providing a useful mass for this purpose.

Most probably I've been watching too many trashy TV shows.

What is interesting to note here is that this amenity kit gesture is viewed as DJ offering a novel benefit / improvement.

Had the same thing been reported for QF, it would be branded as a token insult.

Good on DJ for providing these (I suspect there will be a few members soon who will have a collection). But I'm not going to lose or gain sleep over a domestic amenity kit or the loss of a small mouthful of side salad.

Now if those amenity kits matched VA's international standard and/or they were offered to all pax on the PER red-eye flights, then we would have a good cause for discussion...
