There seems to be a bit of conjecture around the boards that Virgin will announce a significant fleet expansion this week to counter the QF contraction announced last week, while a lot is conjecture, its interesting to note that they have been upping the orders each month on Boeing for more 737s since the last announcement, a trend that is continuing with another order already this year.

I get the impression there's a few interesting announcements coming on Thursday. Not sure of the scale of them. There's been so many genuinely big announcements in the last 12-18 months it's getting harder to impress me :)

And isn't this the truth! I think that's part the current angst against DJ.....when they falter slightly, we hammer them!

Announcement on Thursday eh........I'm flying BNE-ROK rtn on Sat so the only announcment I need is that they'll let me sit in row 1 or 2 on the way back (E190). I'm currently Row 3 with either a shaddow or a body beside?????

They are taking on the Air Australia Airbuses to add to their managre of aircraft :)

I don't think JB needs to notify the ASX of that. :)

So, is there an actual announcement, as one may think reading the title of this thread?

So no actual announcement?? i guess it is wait and see.. So apart from QF stopping SIN-Mumbai and AKL-LAX which other contractions are there considering Domestic was on the increase in terms of PAX? Just curious as I can't really see Virgin picking up those routes.

Good points....

AFF is a good source for NO NEWS to build stories, and I guess this thread will fuel their fire.

Who said anything about domestic, and who has/will have the aircraft to do non stop to Mumbai ;). Who knows for sure, I doubt anyone that's not bound by stock exchange rules either here in Australia, in France, UK or Seattle does, there are certainly some interesting trends such as the new Boeing orders, given the issues with Kingfisher as I mentioned in another thread, there are some usual doors open in terms of fleet slots for new deliveries.

I'm just trying to put your 2 and 2 together.... QF contraction and VA expansion...

The key word being fleet, don't forget the delayed 738s as well for QF. QF mainline only have 3 deliveries (738s) for 2H 2012 and 12 retirements.

Ooh, now VA flying to BOM would be a clever idea (and also a classy way to get to India) especially considering it could be nonstop. Could we potentially see something regional starting up? By the sounds of things, I'm guessing not. But I live in hope. So we're going to see something internationalish announced. Soundds good.

Really? a 737 or an A330 reach India non-stop? (serious Q - not sarcasm which should be expected at this time of night)

Why would they do this given they could do this via codeshare with SQ or even EY? I would like to see them fly to HND and codeshare with NH.

as straitman said...a 777 would be more likely if this were to occur - i don't think an a330 has the legs direct from SYD (or QF would have given it a go).

If only they would announce direct flights to Shanghai.

There is a fairly solid amount of competition at present on the Australia-China (exclusing HK) market with China Airlines out of BNE and SYD Air China out of SYD and MEL, China Eastern out of SYD and MEL China Southern out of BNE, SYD, MEL, PER and soon CNS (or so rumours say...). That's before we consider QF's SYD-PVG flight. I don't think that VA needs to get onto this market just quite yet - especially while the ink's still drying on their SQ agreement.
