DJ fleet expansion announcement?

For the last 3 years?

Tell me which VA route to book then so I fly on a 777.

As far as I am aware, they fly a bunch of groovy 737's and 2 worn out ex Arabian A330s. Please correct me if I am wrong....

Why would they do this given they could do this via codeshare with SQ or even EY?.

Yes exactly SQ has in place good arrangements for India. Why on earth would VA start SYD-BOM when it's really not a good competitive option other than for SYD-BOM market. SYD-DEL, MEL-BOM, MEL-DEL, SYD-BLR, BNE-MAA etc etc all much better to transit SIN than SYD &/or BOM.

I was talking DOM - so, after removing foot from mouth concede that VA have 777;s int

HOWEVER

DJ didn't

therefore the "5 or so" in reference to VA (ex DJ as we knew them) didn't have 777's

Single hop to Europe that just happens to be the second most populous country in the world, without the long haul competition the most populous country has.

as straitman said...a 777 would be more likely if this were to occur - i don't think an a330 has the legs direct from SYD (or QF would have given it a go).

SYD-BOM is 170nm shorter than AKL-LAX, which QF have had the A330-200 on.

Of course, differences in yield might mean that SYD-BOM isn't economic in the same way that AKL-LAX is for QF, but A330 range wouldn't be a limiting factor.

VA ALWAYS had 777's. It's the only metal they've ever flown.

In theory. With some of the more complicated Visa and transit arrangements. Until they are sorted out IMHO, India is not an ideal place to transit. I guess if you don't have to get off the plane would be OK . But plenty of better single stops to Europe.

Isn't this the year for V Australia, or in other words, International Long Haul?

Aren't the 777s going in for a service/upgrade soon?

It's easier than China and more assessable for most Australians to get a Visa for India by comparison, again given the likelihood of point to point as well as transit pax and no competition (Until Air India come back later this year), it makes sense!

Delta is being overhauled as we speak, they are all in DJ titling AFAIK already.

I'd hope that Virgin's network planning is a bit more sophisticated than 'QF just dropped it, let's do it'.

I don't think they will take over any QF exact routines, mind you QF are pretty good at picking up dropped routes quickly, BNE PHE case in point!

Beg to differ, Visa for India are a PITA. China only seems to work as a transit point for Chinese airlines, yet to see western airlines seriously look at it. And who will VA transfer passengers to? If QF can't make HKG work as a transit point to LHR I can't see VA make BOM work as a transit point to anywhere in Europe. Stick to the EY relationship - going to have a much bigger range of destinations that way.

Haven't read the whole thread but they must be getting more 777's. 5 aircraft doesn't really make for much of a long haul international airline. Even NZ has 21 longhaul aircraft with 9 more on order. (though some will be retired when the 787's come)

Well I hope VA expand. There is a new SYD-ADL flight, DJ444, that is timed pretty well for me but only from 2 to 6 April. Fingers crossed that gets extended.

The key word being fleet, don't forget the delayed 738s as well for QF. QF mainline only have 3 deliveries (738s) for 2H 2012 and 12 retirements.

I asked about this in the announcement thread and I'll bring it up again, where was this information about delays for the 738 in what QF announced? I guess a related question relates to changes to QF82. Sounds such a change is logical but I can't see anything about it in the announcements.

They can place all the orders they want for 777's but the reality is that Boeing cannot build them quick enough.

The 777 is Boeing's shining star. If they ordered them now they probably wouldn't have them for 3 years. At the moment 6 months is a long time aviation.
