For me, pointy end flight redemptions are the best value use of MR but you’ve got to stay somewhere when you get to your destination so hotel rewards have a place for me.

Agree with that and as foggy said abive if you can get 1.5c value from a hotel redemption, then it is still not bad value (especially if you've already travelled there at the pointy end from your miles!!)

Interestingly top of the email reads "As at 19/08/2018 your points balance is: xx_ for your Card ending in yyy", where xx_ is the point balance associated with my AmEx Plat Charge, but yyy refers to my Explorer card...

Correct. But I wonder if the Explorer-targetted offer is applicable if the points come out of a (connected) Ascent Premium account? Not that I'm about to transfer to Hilton; just curious I guess...
