DJ Unprecedented upgrade to PE

Recently flew Pacific Blue from WLG to BNE on an extremely cheap fare ($98 maybe). I am a Velocity Platinum thanks to the status match promotion, and upon arriving at the airport, the check-in agents just told me very casually that " ooh! we have you flying premium economy to Brisbane today".

This would have been the first (and probably only) flight on DJ that I would have taken during my status match. Is this something that they automatically did for everyone as a sugar on top thing, do they do it on a seats available basis, or was I just caught up in some mix up?

Either way, it was pretty nice.. But QF gave me an upgrade to business on the other leg for different reasons too.

I think you will find that the op-ups are a necessity and what they may do is look for the highest status flyers to hand out op-ups first.

As a matched platinum (I think WP is still exclusively a QF term ) I took my first 4 DJ flights on a weekend about a month ago and got 'op-upped' (I assume that's what it was) from Y to PE on 2 of them (flight 1 and flight 4 IIRC). Never ever happened with QF. I've no recollection of how full the flights were and the reasons/necessity to op me up, but it was a pleasant surprise, even if materially it did not mean a huge amount (little extra leg room, drink/snack I guess).

A very nice first (and last, given it was flights 1 and 4 it occurred on) impression.

Never been upgraded once in 15 years with Q thru various levels from plain old bronze to gold, first status match gold flight I was allocated 3A in Y in a new configured plane out of Newcastle with spare middle seats behind the bulkhead so lots of extra room and J was full of plat flyers (bag tags gave them away lol) on the way back old configured plane but upgraded to PE , my first ever, was very very happy. Got another couple of flights coming up, this week, will see how I go!
