Do you leave a tip for hotel housekeeping?

The carry-no-cash-can't-tip problem had been obviated at a hotel in Vancouver recently: there was QR code payment portal option shown on multiple stickers in the room!

Like tips at Roux Michelin restaurants in London, so it then just goes to the hotel and not workers.

I'm not sure I understand. Thailand does not have a tipping culture. If you dine out where locals dine they don't leave tips, if they do it might be a few small coins.

In USA? I don't care if workers are not paid enough. It's not for me to supplement their salaries. They need to start a union and seek better pay.

P.S. I don't get paid enough. I travel economy, stay in 2-3 star hotels and eat cheap food by making my own food. For me it's the opportunity to get out of here for a break.

In the US, this is particularly a clown show, so I avoid going.

Interesting experience in Pattaya last month.

Stayed 8 nights in a 2 star hotel. Only worked on 1 of those days on 4th day and requested room clean. The rest time of the time I am out at golf from early morning and I don't want housekeeping in my room.

While housekeeper was in my room a Thai lady staying with an older farang a few rooms away came over and had quick chat to housekeeper and handed her 100 baht. Then not long after the young farang staying opposite my room said something to housekeeper and handed her 50 baht.

I don't want to judge nor complain but I felt as if housekeeper was expecting tip from me. Also If I'm not mistaken housekeepers already get ~500 baht/day salary which is pretty good anyway. I'll leave tipping to those that think tipping gets you better service.

I tend to follow ‘When in Rome …..’ whether I’m in Rome or not.

When In Rome
Just the last 6 nights
The housekeeping was ordinary
The notice in the room. Towels only changed every 3 days
KnOCK ORF time seemed to be about 10.30am! FFS
And granted Sunday (the3rd day) we slept all day so had poked up the do not disturb sign

Asked at the front desk after 4 days to get the sheets changed. Temp averaged 35 -38 so yeah was necessary

But no I do not tip

Well unless it was Egypt - many staff said the service tip charge was managements not theirs
A couple of times in Athens
One night in Dresden for exemplary service
And a couple of times in Germany for great service
Plus a few times in the Eastern Europe Poland, Czech (average wage 10 Euros) and Slovakia - again for good / great service

In Australia, they should never have existed in the first place. I do not tip housekeeping or anyone else in Australia.

It's my understanding Australia has the second highest minimum wage in the world, behind France.
