I was wondering how many frequent flyers live close to their local airport. Considering what an odious task it is to drive (or cab it) to and from the airport for so many flights I thought it would be handy to live close by.

Upside - quick trip to the airport, get to see lots of shiny planes
Downside - cabbies would hate you, aircraft noise.

By close I'd say 15 minutes drive or less. Who has the longest drive among frequent flyers? I know people in the Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands (NSW) who are very regular flyers - don't know how they do it. I'm about 40 minutes (and $23 in tolls for a round trip) from SYD and that's enough.

I fly out of BNE more than OOL but live on the Gold Coast, and a train ticket will set me back ~$22, a taxi fare ~$100+ and petrol + tolls I’m not exactly sure on, but I have e-tag so don’t take much notice. I think parkings the real issue there ;)

Well I live about 500 metres from Darwin Airport, so either a 3 minute taxi ride or a 20 minute walk, and yes the taxi drivers hate me

I live about 20 minutes drive from the airport. It's an almost guaranteed time because I don't have to travel through major feeder roads to the CBD, nor through the CBD. (Things only go to the dogs during heavy afternoon peak hour with rain.)

On the other hand, getting public transport to the airport from where I live is moot (no train station near me). And it still costs at least $40-$60 for me to catch a taxi to the airport from where I live :(

Our area is underneath a flight path or two - Lindsay Wilson lives around the same area; he can attest to the flight paths (he still likes to watch some planes along with his kids).

Are we neighbours Kenny? Hope you're not that Federal Copper down the street whose school teacher Missus has Darwin City Council on her speed dial. Apologies my dogs got out three times but we've redone the fence twice now and had no more escapes since. They're not dangerous they'd lick you to death!

Back to the topic Warks. Yep. One set of traffic lights under 5 minutes & taxi fare is around $9.60.

Cheers Oz

If you were to extend the centrelines from Redcliffe airport and RWY 14 at BNE you would have my place, so I also get a some aircraft noise, and also dont have to worry about going through the city so takes 25-30 mins. In terms of noise for some reason the 9PM to Darwin is the most often noticed, at work I am under the breakie creek approach which seems to be most active late afternoons.

I also dont really have an option for public transport, I could have driven to work and caught the train yesterday and saved $7 compared to parking but would have had to pay for a taxi back to work as the train does not work at 11PM, pointless.

I used to get paid to watch planes for a living so I dont feel the need unless I hear an unusual note, such as a pure jet or a rotary engine.

Suspect you must live near me. We're 15-20mins away, near to flight path (great views of the international arrivials lining up most mornings to land) and taxi is ~$40.

Long term Carparking at BNE is a rip off but sometimes no option. For us, >3 days = taxi, <= 3 days = drive (3 days carpark is $80).

I used to live in Arncliffe a few years ago, which was very close to SYD. We were right under the flight path of the short runway there.... it was always impressive seeing the widebodies coming right at ya and taking off right at the very limits of the end of the runway - of course this only happened when the winds were in our favour. Landings were impressive also.
I guess i'm in the minority where aircraft sounds barely affect me - I was extremely sad when I had to give up my airport views and spotting opportunities when we moved to the North Shore. We had a full view of the *A end of the terminal and it was great seeing all the movements at the airport.
On that, it would be great living in a high up penthouse in those apartments in Wolli Creek - they would have the best views by far.

Ignoring a couple of posted speed limits () on the Geelong freeway, I am 15-18 mins from AVV

I occasionally have a J* flight overhead, but too high to see the whites of the pilots eyes!

At the speed limit I am 35 mins from MEL, we get the western flights overhead, but again, still quite high.

The impressive thing is the military jets in and out of AVV every now and again, and around the air show time, they are usually quite low and ALWAYS warrant racing outside for a look :)

Plane geek eh?

Mr!

We live approx 240km from Melbourne airport.

2.5-3 hrs by car or 2.75 hrs by train to the city ($26.40 each way in F) then Skybus ($16 each way) to the airport. Depending upon length of stay away and number of passengers as to which way is better.

In the past I have lived as close as on several Military bases. If anyone wants to complain about noise try living at Amberley with F-111s in and out all day long.

Imagine what it will be like with Wedgetails/C17s/ and soon the super hornets and KC30's, and in the past there were the Canberras, they were noisy just starting (with the cartridge )

No wonder Ipswich is marked to be the growth area for SE Queensland, all the work is at RAAF Amberley, you should see the size of the new airmans mess!

Just over 20 minutes taking the monaro highway in depending on traffic, but most of CBR is pretty close to the airport. That said it's still a $50 to $60 taxi ride, so I usually drive in and park my car, or get a mate of mine who works out at the airport to drive me in...

During my 5 years at Amberley there were F4 (Phantoms), F-111s, Canberras, Chinook, Iroquois, Sioux and Pilatus Porters based at there. As well as that there was a continuous stream of visiting a/c.

As the crow flies, I like less than 1km from an airport. Its a shame Qantas does not use this airport as it would save me a $75 cab ride and 35 mins drive to/from BNE.

Just over 20 mins on the freeway to Tulla. Next year we'll be moving further away, across the river - the journey time to/from airport will lengthen to 45-60 mins I think based on past experiences when I lived in St Kilda.

Usually cab it (much easier than flaffing around with public transport or parking), unless the other half isn't travelling with me and is available to give me a lift.

I live very close to PER domestic, my cheapest cab ride was just over $8 (but somehow it's still $25 from the international terminal). The angry cabbies really annoy me so I'll take the bus whenever I can.

The aircraft noise isn't too bad from the main runway, it's much louder from the cross runway (06/24) but they don't use it a huge amount so when they do it's a novelty. As I was leaving for work the other day there was an SQ A330 coming down on runway 24.

It will probably be less of a novelty next month when the main runway is closed and they're using 06/24 exclusively during the day.

So harvyk..... You're a Southsider!

Northside for me... and the airport is about the same distance as from you....

I used the < or > 3 days equation too to decide whether to taxi or park.. but fortunately could often get a lift in..

I say "used" and "could" because these days I tend to do a one day/one way car hire and drive up to SYD... Less of a hassle than dealing with QF as an NB... Hard to take after getting used to the treatment on NZ as a Gold Elite!

My closest was when I was living at Duntroon. I tended to ask friends for lifts because the Canberra taxi drivers hated me otherwise. I did manage to get a lift off the person seated next to me once......

Now I'm 2 and a half hours from Canberra airport and at least 3 hours from Sydney.

I don't mention that Moruya airport is probably less than an hour away......

Live ~40km (~45 minutes drive with a reasonable run) from MEL.

Work ~135km - in the opposite direction from home - (~90 minutes with a small amount of extra pedal ) from MEL.

Taxi = always dreadful value on any short - medium absence.

I live ~11 minutes from SYD international and ~15 minutes from SYD domestic.

Unfortunately a taxi ride costs $30+ from international and $35+ from domestic. Would cost even more in peak hour traffic.
