Do you need passport when booking flight

It's been a long time since I booked my first int'l flight. My daughter & granddaughter are going with me September '16 to England. They haven't got passports. I will be booking our fares direct through qf site. I realise it's a while since fares are available anyway. Would be interested in answer so I know how much I need to push. TIA

Yes, all passengers need to show passports to checkin to intl flights.

You *should* be able to book tickets now and add extra passenger info later, info such as a passport number.

Just be very careful that you book the tickets using the names exactly as they will appear in the passport, remembering that the passports will be issued in their legal name taking into account what is on their birth cert, citizenship cert (if applicable) and formal name changes such as marriage (not all name changes on marriage are formally and legally accepted).

Safest bet is to get the passports and then book.

Very true... Or it will cost you a horrible amount to change a middle name... Which you spelt correctly on one booking and not the other..

Simply leave the middle name off the booking and ensure the first and family name are as they will appear on the passport.

Ouch. Might be why I don't usually bother with a middle name.

For booking without passport numbers I suggest it would be best to talk to the airline first otherwise it could cost lots to change details later...

Ouch. Might be why I don't usually bother with a middle name.

I've still got 7 months to change it so every time I'm on the phone to Qantas I ask and hope that someone will eventually do it for free...

I've booked int flights in the last 12 months without having a valid passport.

No, you don't need a passport when booking flights, just make sure you don't leave arranging the passport til the last minute, as that can get very nerve racking (speaking from experience).

Agreed. And stress and tension never help the flying experience. Don't leave it too late.

I can't remember which airline it was, but I had issues booking flights for one of my daughters a couple of years ago because I had to put passport details in and even though she had a valid passport it had less than six months on it. Couldn't book until I had new passport for her. Was not happy because it cost me more.
