Dodging Israel

I'd be much more concerned by the fact that the route you've proposed (i.e. the great circle, which is NEVER available in that part of the world), takes you over Iraq and Syria.

That was me, and was just for illustration when I asked the question did the flight go north or south?

I'm almost certain it didn't. The white part of the path is interpolated while the green part is actually recorded. Perhaps on this day the Egyptian recorder was not active.

It is reciprocal with El Al. The path from TLV to BKK avoids Saudi Arabia.

That's not relevant. The flight in question was from UAE to Barcelona. It was heading in a perfect arc until about 40 mins before Israel. The path then dropped south and crossed just south of the Israelie border. It then tracked north and joined the original track. The 2nd officer was Arabic. I wonder if the times the path does not change are when all western flight crew are flying.

I would differ here suggesting it may be relevant. It provides some overall perspective.

Your last sentence is conjecture, which I don't believe you will get a definitive answer on.

The UAE blames Mossad for the assassination in 2010 of Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh of Hamas. EK would certainly not have an Israeli diversion flight planned into the FMS and neither would its policy be to overfly what, in effect, is an enemy country. Emirates is a fine airline with good flight crews and that's far more important that a fluffy pillow, which, incidentally, is what was used to kill the Hamas chappie.

Auf Wiedersehen.

There is also the possibility that Israel does not allow EK overflight rights or that EK refuse to pay Israel.

I can see you are going to be an entertaining addition to the forum.:)

The wife of a friend of ours in the UAE had a small part time job at the local school their kids attended. Her task - was to go through each book in the school library whiting out any reference to Israel.
