Applied for a points upgrade (QF12) in 2 months' time.

But look at this screenshot:

Who are these people taking up all the F seats ?

Paid pax ? Unlikely !

Must be AFF FASA !

My heart is sinking every time I look at the seat map (which is an under-representation of seat allocation in any case).

I guess there is a good chance I will keep my 45K points as I do not like row 1 or row 5.

QF11/12 has a pretty good paid F load at times, keep in mind F is available for about $10K MEL/SYD-LAX return during sales which is pretty good value as J is normally about $6-8K

I have found generally 2-4 F seats are booked well in advance so the seat map is about right

Unless you are Gold/Plat or above, I don't like your upgrade chances

Problem is once you fly F, J is like Y :(

Once row 4 is filled up, I will desist ... back to row 12 (as a WP).

I ruled out rows 1 and probably 5 (my own opinion only - lots of AFFers will disagree there).

The way over (QF11) is still looking good at this stage.

Looking on the bright side, the account will be 45,000 points plus some if that happens.

I really don't think there's a bad seat in F on the QF A380. People have their preferences but I'd be happy just being in that cabin!
