Does Platinum help with Jetstar flight SNAFU's?

I'm thinking of putting my mum on a Jetstar flight to Sydney to connect with a Oneworld OS trip the next day.
But i'm a bit nervous as it's the only non-stop flight to Sydney that day, and if the flight gets cancelled she might be in danger of missing her flights to europe.

Would the platinum support assist her if the flight was cancelled in arranging flights on qantas/jetstar that same day, or would they wash their hands of it, saying the flights are on jetstar and not qantas. AFAIK travel insurance would not cover the costs either, except in the case of a weather event.

When you say platinum support what do you mean by that?
Will the airline guarantee they will put your mother on a qantas flight?. No
Might they help to your satisfaction?. Possibly
 
I was faced with a similar dilemma a little while back. There was a Qantas and a Jetstar flight at roughly the same time, but if the Jetstar flight got cancelled I would have missed my international connection the next day.

I decided it wasn't worth the risk of using Jetstar and paid a bit more for a Qantas ticket. In the end, both flights ran on time but my anxiety was less for the weeks leading up to the flight - and it was probably worth it for that!

Sadly, Platinum status is unlikely to help when flying Jetstar. The only thing you really get is lounge access, but the Qantas lounge staff don't have access to Jetstar systems/bookings.

Also your questions also assume there is a spare seat to slot your mother into in the event of a JQ cancellation. When an A320 gets cancelled potentially 180 passengers need to be accomodated. Do you think they will all be accomodated on other airlines on that day?

I suggest buy a QF seat. It is 2.5 times less likely to be cancelled based on the Dec BITRE
 
Is a single Jetstar flight riskier than two Qantas flights? The risk of cancellation now doubles plus the added risk of a delayed first flight causing a misconnect.

but one presumes the QF flight would be to a hub to then connect to SYD. I don't know let's imagine a route like LST-MEL-SYD. If one can get from LST-MEL, then lots of options to get up to SYD and QF would protect any issues vs JQ saying hey rebooked next day.

The concern of course is still getting that first flight out to make it to the nearer hub - delays are less important imo as the OWA is the next day, but you wouldn't want to leave in the evening of course from the origin. if QF have multiple departures to the other airport (in my example above, MEL) then more chance for protection and to still get to SYD imo.

(no I don't think we're talking about LST here given there would be multiple frequencies on JQ out of there, just an example)
 
If the Jetstar flight is on a Qantas PNR/ticket number you'd likely get decent assistance by getting through to the Hobart contact centre as a Platinum, but as far as the airport experience is concerned if something was to go awry close to departure none of the Jetstar airport staff will know or care about your Qantas status.

QF would probably refer anything back to JQ anyway. I am not sure they would help very much if the JQ flight was cancelled and pax was rebooked onto the next one. As far as QF would be concerned it's handled, and no relevance to the separate OWA booking. I'm not sure it would mean QF would rebook onto a QF routing though. Possibly but I wouldn't bank on that personally, even with a QF5xx_ flight number.

Yeah it's a tossup, it would be great to get some real world data, but unfortunately QF Plats don't fly Jetstar much! My mom hates them. I guess the trick would be to call Platinum number as soon as the Jetstar flight is cancelled and demand to be put on QF flights before the Jetstar staff make arrangements. If Qantas have issued the ticket then surely it's in their interest to look after high value customers?

Do not book the JQ flight.
QF status counts for nothing on JQ and if the flight is cancelled / delayed etc the operating carrier JQ is responsible for rebooking.

In this case QF group / QF status counts for nothing.
I’m P1 and even I would not rely on this to get me out of trouble with any issues.
 
QF Plats don't fly Jetstar much!
I’m P1 and I’m happy to fly JQ when I can get them at a big discount (which they have regularly). Apart from the current high cancellation rate (and the fact that the JQ terminal in MEL is distant from the lounge) there are a few benefits. I always add the MAX bundle which is the same SCs as QF DSC, and you get something to eat/drink, choice of any seat, 30kgs of luggage and you can cancel (for a voucher for full value) if you see it even cheaper later on or pick up a QF DSC offer instead. I once booked a cheap one, and when they undercut the price later I canceled for a voucher, and then used the voucher to buy the cheaper flight, retaining the unused portion for another flight. JQ vouchers are more flexible than QF too.

All IMO of course.
 
I wouldn't trust status to help with anything JQ related.

JQ booked for Qld flights (because QF didn't fly those routes). The JQ tickets included onboard food to the value of $10 or something (can't really remember, treated it as a bonus rather than something I specifically sought out). Was able to use the first leg, but not the second - the polite JQ FA showed me his tablet which indicated we weren't entitled to anything. Followed up with the P1 team, who apologised and said they'd provide some kind of voucher. That was six months ago - nothing ever arrived. Not quite tempted to do a chargeback for failure to provide services/false advertising but it's annoying.
 
It’s a JQ flight - unless you booked it through QF, you should follow up with JQ. It happened to me once that JQ (actually it was 3K) didn’t have my food on their tablet. JQ gave me a voucher. I’ve found JQ customer service are quite responsive if they’ve stuffed up. Follow up by email - not phone.
 
It does operate as a separate airline, so any help will be reliant on a sympathetic call centre operator who also knows what they need to do.

If it was me putting my mother on multiple flights they’d all be QF for peace of mind.

You might get priority on the phone queue but that's about it isn't it?

Higher levels of status definitely get more priority and options - specially when the irrops systems come in and do auto rebookings. I have recent experiences of this and I am certain as P1 I got better flights and flexibility than probably those with lower status. That's even without me calling or anything - I could see the flight situations via EF and the various changes to my own booking (due to a 2h delayed inbound from LAX) and definitely got treated the best they probably could imo.

I'm not saying it's always the case mind you but yes status would help - specially QF status for QF operated flights.
 
P1. I was booked BNE-MEL mid-last year. Got a text as I traveled to the airport from QF that the flight was delayed by a couple of hours. My phone rang 5 minutes later. VIP team proactively offering alternatives. They booked me on an earlier flight which I could still arrive in time for.
