Does the ticket need your middle name on SQ flights?

Hi
Just wondering if anyone can help me. I got tickets on SQ AKL-SIN via AS for next week. The tickets don't have our middle names because our profiles on AS don't have our middle names. Has anyone had issues checking in without middle names on the SQ tickets?

For our onward bookings from SIN-SFO I got SQ (booked with SQ) to change our Krisflyer profiles so they have the middle names, and match our passports. They also changed the tickets to show the middle names as those awards were booked via SQ but said I would have to contact AS for the SQ AKL-SIN ticket name changes. Is it worth doing this? Don't want to screw up the bookings in any way as we leave next week!!

Have only got good things to say about the SQ call centre. That took over an hour on the phone to sort this. I thought I should at least get our krisflyer accounts correct showing our middle names.

Some SQ operators say not having the middle name on the ticket doesn't matter but I just thought I'd check here.

Just a note that if travelling to the USA , the name on the ticket must match your passport or you will have trouble with the APIS data part of ticketing. But I haven't heard of any other countries being as picky about this as the USA.

Note that passports have a surname and a given name. The given name can be multiple components (i.e. spaces between them); often the second component is what Westerners call a "middle name" but it's really just a part of your given name. If you get in the habit of always using your full given name (i.e. first and middle) on international documents like airline tickets, you will help avoid any confusion on this point in the future.

But it is of no help when you DONT ACTUALLY HAVE A MIDDLE NAME ! I do remember having a ticket print out with this on it =
Mary No middle Name Smith - we thought it was funny at the time !!

Where did you get the idea from this discussion that a middle name is required? As explained above, for international travel purposes a middle name is just a portion of your given name. If you don't have a middle name, simply leave that part blank.

I got picked up for this once in Vietnam a few years ago. I cant remember the exact situation but they added it into the system and re-issued tickets/passes. Was a bit weird. I just always add if the system asks for it now.

Thanks all. SQ has changed my Krisflyer account to include my middle name. They also changed the tickets for the SIN-SFO leg to include middle names.

I think it's confusing because on the krisflyer account in the name space it says something like 'First (given names)' which is confusing. I will now try and change my AS account to show my middle name, as I think that's the name that gets put on the ticket when you book an award ticket with them.

In my experience in flying out of Singapore, the often end up just handwriting your middle name on the boarding pass if it missing.

I don’t think it was mrsdrron who put ‘no middle name’ in the data field 😊. I reckon she left it blank , as you suggest.

I have never had my ticket match my full names in my passport when travelling to the USA. Never been an issue from a passenger perspective.

Passports are scanned at check-in and the full information is transmitted electronically to relevant authorities. The boarding pass or actual ticket doesn’t seem to be as important.

I too have never had my middle name in my ticket. I used to fret to my TA about this, but she gave me the same explanation as mel_traveller, and in dozens of journeys to the USA it’s never been a problem.

I'm on a same boat. I booked a singapore airline flight using alaska miles and they didn't include my middle name on the ticket. Did you have any issues during boarding?

I don't think I did. Actually I rang SQ and got them to add our middle names to the tickets. It took quite a while to do that for 4 pax over several flights.

However from what I've read other people seem to think you would get let on anyway even without your middle names on the tickets.

I was getting bounced back and forth between Alaska and Singapore while trying to add my middle name to my reservation. I can't cancel and rebook the ticket because there are no award seats available on the day of my flight, and I do not want to lose my business class seat.

Those tickets you booked through Alaska, is that the one you're able to add a middle name?

Sorry I think I got mixed up as we just did a big multi flight trip. The tickets that I was able to get Singapore Airlines call centre to change and add the middle name were award tickets I booked via Singapore Airlines, not Alaska airlines.

Got it. however, the ticket that you bought through AS for your AKL-SIN leg. Did you had any issues checking in without a middle name on the ticket? Apologies if I have so many questions!

I booked for the kids on AKL-KUL on SQ via AS. The tickets only had their first and last names.
However I made sure afterwards that their Mileage Plan and their Kris Flyer accounts had their full names. I had to ring both airlines. I just wanted to make sure. I think it would have been quite a job trying to change the SQ tickets (booked via AS) to put their middle names and thought that just sounded too hard and I might lose the bookings...

The ticket confirmation I got emailed from Mileage Plan only had their first and last names and I didn't have any problem at the airport. I thought that if the check in agent wanted to, she/he could check their passports and their Krisflyer account, which were the same and included their middle names.

I had to spend a fair bit of time on the phone to Krisflyer and AS to add their middle names as you can't change this stuff online I found. I have a skype account to do this!!
