Has anyone purchased a DONE 3 out of Kul or Bali this year (from Australia)?

Given prices out of Per to either spot, I'm guessing you could still get Plat points at a much lower cost per point than my ex Aus Done 4 plans.

I seem to remember someone mentioned about using the CX office in jakarta but I can't find it. Any links greatly appreciated.

How about booking via the OW site? You can try out all sort of options before committing yourself. ('Coz of the link posting restrictions, I can't give the URL but try www oneworld com ow flight-info plan-and-book-your-itinerary & putting dots in place of the first 2 spaces and slashes in place of the last 3 spaces :confused:.)

that is a very good suggestion. As I understand, note I haven't booked any DONEs only played around with the planner, the key to getting best value is having AA or LAN ticket the DONE as this reduces the +++. The online booking tool only does this when the first flight is on AA or LAN. In the case of a first flight with JAL, CX (I think) and QF then it tickets with QF, which has the highest +++.

Of course, this is more of a planning issue. But something to consider.

Thanks everyone.
I have used the OW planner to "mock up" some tickets, and was aware that by using Jl or Cp as my first flight I would end up paying more in fuel fines.
What I am searching for though, is a link to someone actually buying one in Indonesia. I seem to remember a poster talking about how to book and pay through (I think) a CP office in Jakarta.

There is a report (on FT) from Jan 08 that the CX manager in Jakarta wouldn't issue a OW ticket with the initial sector on QF, but actually called up the QF Jakarta office and taught them how to do it! :mrgreen:

If you have to pay the fuel fines. Why wouldn't you just pay for it using the online booking engine? Why waste time and hassle on ringing a local office when it can be booked and paid online? Is there some advantage?

... Is there some advantage?
Of course, AA, for example generally only charge Fuel Fines on their own flights when you book through them. Other carrier tend to charge for all flights.

Other reasons?

I booked a LONE4 today with LAX-ORD-FCO AA segments; I will be upgrading to business. To do this, it is most simple to have an AA ticket number (begins 001-) so booking through AA is desirable.

Ok, thanks.

However, they are talking about ringing the local CX or JL office to ticket. In which case the DONE isn't going to be booked or ticketed by AA. Is it?

Just thinking of the options; Online booking first flight AA - should ticket with AA;
First flight with CX (and maybe JL) will ticket with QF.

I suppose there must be an advantage to ticketing with CX or JL instead of QF?

I may be way off the mark here, but isn't the advantage the price? Specifically, booking out of a particular location rather than through a particular airline? So the OP is regarding how to book from KUL or DPS?

The price is one advantage. But some airlines change lower fuel fines and other fees. AA for example, don't charge fuel fines for flights on other OW airlines (iirc) This can result in a significant saving. I've only heard that AA and LAN are like this

QF at the other extreme will charge the full fuel fines for all flights regardless of airline. I think that CX and JL also charge the full fees possible.

Anyway, my understanding is that if you only want to take advantage of the lower price then you could just book using the online booking engine, rather than stuffing around with calling a local office and arranging a payment. So I'm asking if there is some other advantage that would make the hassle worthwhile to call the local office.

Reasons? I just posted one :confused:

eVIPs/Point Upgrades on AA flights can only be done on AA tickets.

It still is possible to book an xONEx via an airline other than AA and still upgrade the AA flights but there's a deal of faffing around with the re-ticketing of specific segments and it does introduce additional complications. Best to avoid if possible.

Another reason to book the DONE ove rthe phone is that the online b ooking engine seems a bit flaky. I tried to book during the last 10% off sale and thought it had all gone through. Found out a week later (just as sale finished) that something had gone wrong (no one can tell me what) and they could reprice it, but couldn't book at the original price.

Definitely prefer a human for that sort of thing from now on!

If it is an OW ATW ticket then there is no difficulty in using eVIPs since AA can just reissue the ticket after applying the upgrade with no hassles

It becomes an issue if having a ticket issued by another carrier where AA cannot reissue ( such as a QF r/t ticket which has restrictions on who can ticket )

I have had no problems upgrading AA sectors on a QF issued DONE.
2008 with EVIP-did it with EXP line-upgrades confirmed immediately and reissued eticket received the next day.
2009-points upgrade again done by phone(plat line now).Again reissued eticket no problem but took a week.The only problem was that in reissue mrsdrron's QFF number was replaced with her Aadvantage number and that took a bit of fixing.
Now one question if i book online with a DONE starting ex KUL,DPS,AKL but naturally pay with my Aussie CC do I still get the cheaper price?

I'm looking at an ex-DPS soon, just priced a fare using the OW onling booking, where first carrier was JL;

DPS-xNRT-SYD-LHR-BCN-HEL-xLHR-SFO-LAS-DFW-YVR-MIA-JFK-HKG-NRT-DPS

and came out to be like US$850 in taxes and fuel fines (fuel fines came out at ~$480USD)

I booked a LONE4 today ...
On line this routing with the first segment on Qantas had NZD744 in
ppplus.bmp
, with AA as the first segment it was NZD804.*

The pricing has come back from Dublin for the booking;
ppplus.bmp
was NZD582. :D

That's ~AUD603, ~AUD654 and ~AUD472 respectively - (In our case, for the two PAX, a total saving of over AUD260).

*It seems Qantas no longer charge as much in fuel fines. There is an AA transatlantic flight in the routing, so the AA quote is charging two sets.

It's great to hear from people who are familiar with this type of ticket.
I am looking at starting from Bali for the price, as converting the US$ DONE3 with a cheap fare up from Perth would give me a couple of grand to spend while away vs an AUS DONE4. OW carriers northwards out of Bali seem to only be CP and JL, but the majority of 16 flights I wanted to use were AA. I mistakenly thought that if a local Indonesian TO did the ticket I could "choose" the paper (hence lower the fuels).
Another case of too little (mistaken) knowledge being dangerous??:oops:

Yep you did give a reason, if ticketed on/by AA. However, it is not clear to me that it would be ticketed by AA if you ring the CX office in Jakarta, which is what has been proposed.

Is the CX office in Jakarta going to ticket with AA? If not then the faffing around comes into it to make the reason given valid.

There is no faffing around. Once CX ( or whoever ) has issued it , then can phone AA and request the eVIP ( or mileage ) upgrade. The upgrade will be processed and the AA system will reissue it onto AA stock. Since any OW carrier can issue/reissue OW ATW tickets then there is no problem in the slightest

The issue only occurs on tickets which are issued by another carrier and cannot be reissued by AA ( such as QF r/t tickets )
