Downgrade from J to Y

I’m afraid you were served porkies in this regard. First the airline needs to deliver your luggage to you when they lose the bag. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a different city than what you were originally ticketed, the moment the airlines losses your bag getting it to you is their problem. Indeed I’ve heard of stories where AA had to ship a bag that was originally destined for MIA from JFK to a residence in Piccadilly, London when they misplaced it for over a week.

With regards to compensation owed, Qantas policy and frankly Australian law doesn’t apply here since we are dealing with an international trip the origin nation and destination both party to the Montreal Convention which sets out ~ $2000 USD in compensation for missing bags. So I would think purchasing whatever is necessary that was in that bag is reasonable. No it doesn’t mean going on a shopping spree on QF’s dime but if I were attending a conference abroad and QF lost my dress clothes it does mean me going to a department store and buying dress clothes which obviously could exceed the suggestion made by QF. And it would be difficult for QF to say that it is unreasonable either!

para 1 - sure i'm well aware. but i was moving every night, and staying in airbnbs and rando places where i couldnt trust that my bag would be there, also there was a cyclone. much rather it was held at the airprot when it did arrive and i got it the day before i flew out.

para 2 - sure, i fully agree, im well across the montreal/warsaw conventions. qantas on my last int trip before this one put a whole the size of a 5c piece in my hard brand new suitcase and absoltely refused to do anything about it after about 5 calls and 10 emails. so i claimed on ins and shurugged my shoulders. im a) not willing to go to small claims over it and b) dont want to be banned by qff should i take further action. 300 is pretty good and ins will pick up the rest.

Qantas can't ban you for enforcing your protected rights.

Prerry sure Qantas could ban you for whatever they feel like, what am I going to do go to court to get an order ordering them to allow me to fly on their airline?
I am not a lawyer, and I do understand that in general Australians have less rights than those in other countries (i.e. USA). However, it is my understanding that Qantas can ban you for anything they like so long as the reason isn't due to some protected right. For instance, Qantas can't ban you because you are black or you are a jew, or you are enforcing other protected rights that are given to you in Australia (such as passenger rights).

I don't disagree, but I reckon if you annoyed them enough they would find a valid reason, is my point.

I will grant you though that there is a fine line between enforcing your rights and being a royal pain in the cough. Again I think context is key. If you are the type of person that takes every misstep to abuse the airline, then yeah you are right. But I think in terms of things like lost luggage it's not unreasonable to assume that in certain circumstances such a low limit of $100/day isn't warranted. I mean think about what you pack in your checked bags, namely: clothing and toiletries. I don't know about you but if I'm missing my toiletries (i.e. razor, sunblock, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, shaving cream, after shave, deodorant, etc.) I can see spending $30 or $40 there easily. Now you look at a day of clothing, well a shirt, jeans, socks and underwear can easily add up to $100 in a day for clothing. So yeah you can totally spend more than $100 a day when they lose your luggage. But I think if you were to send in itemized receipts to Qantas, they wouldn't argue with a few bucks here or there. Where they might raise an eyebrow is if you put a $600 iPad as a sundry expense! 😂

I sent them the 1473 worth of receipts I spent. Clothing in nzd is very expensive, I needed shoes, rain jacket, jumper etc etc adds up quick! Toiletries, cheap electric razor. I completely agree, 300 bucks was just a pair of shoes!
