Day 13

Another 20 minutes on the jeep and we were at the opposite side of the bay that we just stopped at. Nicer beach here, a bar, a few places hiring out deck chairs, and chance to get up close to an iguana having a feed.

Water here is very shallow, so able to walk out about a kilometre at waist level.

Day 13

There is a donkey sanctuary somewhere on the island, and there are a few wandering around the place

IMG_1887__1487490236_58.7.171.97.jpg

Continuing driving to the South West coast, not a lot to see, salt plains inland, rocky beach on the other side, surprisingly as the island is so eco friendly a lot of rubbish along the side of the road water side.
Finally something to see, an old abandoned lighthouse and keepers hut

IMG_1903__1487490334_58.7.171.97.jpg

Kept driving until we came to our destination, the slave huts. Guide let us in on a secret, these weren't the originals, nor on the original site. They were put here for tourism purposes, as there isn't a lot to see on this part of the island. Also told us that the huts weren't used for housing, rather for the slaves belongings, and also for them to rest in during the hottest parts of the day

Day 13

Couple of minutes up the road back towards the ship were the huts on the original site, which we sped past.

IMG_2006__1488004013_220.253.160.18.jpg

Passed the salt piles, airport (which our guide worked at as a firefighter), and the pastel coloured houses. Area south of the port seemed to be quite affluent.

IMG_2031__1488004140_220.253.160.18.jpg

Back to the port, as the sun was slowly starting to set.

IMG_2051__1488004402_220.253.160.18.jpg

Sat and grabbed a coffee from a place that was attached to an ice cream shop, nice bit of cross promotion

IMG_2058__1488004515_220.253.160.18.jpg

Day 13

Too late for the restaurant, so made a pig of myself at the buffet. Nice gentle breeze blowing while sitting at the back of the boat.
Few snaps while departing, and another towel animal.

Day 14

Early morning arrival into Aruba, bit of fogging in the camera, fortunately was able to clear the problem up

IMG_2124__1488067813_220.253.160.18.jpg

Back to going through a duty free terminal

IMG_2187__1488068175_220.253.160.18.jpg

Was doing a tour that would start with a cruise on a catamaran. All tours met in the hall of the duty free area, and most activities required waivers to be signed. Of course there were too few people staffed, and things were moving quite slowly, until a few passengers on the ship took charge and got things going.

Waiting for the catamaran to pull in

Day 14

Catamaran coming in to pick us up

IMG_2207__1488091356_220.253.160.18.jpg

Sat myself up near the bow, and is was quite calming riding the waves and the breeze blowing against the face.

IMG_2243__1488091580_220.253.160.18.jpg

Lots of development and hotels on the resort side of the island

IMG_2286__1488091702_220.253.160.18.jpg

About two thirds of the people on the cat were continuing on to a couple of snorkel sites, while the rest of the group, including me, were to be dropped off at shore for a little time on the beach, followed by a land tour. Really felt I had made a blue choosing not to stay on and have a snorkel.

Day 14

Time was up on the beach, and on to the dated and uncomfortable bus, 1st stop California Lighthouse

Back on the road, again quite a nice view with the water out the window

IMG_2511__1488701978_220.253.160.18.jpg

We then turned inland, lost the view of the water, view now was of houses and cactus plants. The odd house with some Christmas decorations.

Day 14

Next stop, some church. Spent about 15 minutes here

IMG_2544__1488766274_220.253.160.18.jpg

More driving through the residential areas, then to the Casibari Rock Formations

Day 14

Tour stopped back in Oranjestad, so went for a bit of a walk. Small but pleasant, lot of little shops selling touristy cough.

Pink building from earlier in the day, full of high end duty free jewellery shops, not much use for a battler from Perth

IMG_2687__1488794424_220.253.160.18.jpg

Over the road to the waterfront, series of stalls set up, full of the same touristy cough that were in the shopsWater was looking quite nice though

IMG_2688__1488794554_220.253.160.18.jpg

Day 14

It was extremely hot, and there was about 2 hours until the boat was due to depart, so I had a choice to make - keep exploring; grab a cab and go back to Palm Beach; or the easy option of jumping back on the boat, having a shower and heading to the lunch buffet.Took the easy option.

A very nice pork chop for dinner. My table mate spent the day at Palm Beach, lounging around the resorts. Was very envious of them, as there wasn't many highlights to see on my land tour

Day 14 - 17

3 nights and 2 days until the boat arrived back at Fort Lauderdale.

Most of the time was spent like this

fat guy sunbaking.jpeg

And this

long-haired-fat-man-eating-stuffing-himself-with-cake-and-ice-cream-ADYP8A.jpg

Departure was painless, apart from nearly getting on the wrong transfer bus that would have taken me to Orlando rather than Miami

Day 17 - 19

Time to finish the report.
Arrived at Miami Airport at around 10.30am, flight wasn't until 5.00pm, unable to check in until 2 o'clock, so a loooong 3 and a half hours sitting with my bags. Passed the time with 30 minutes of free wifi, read a book, and attempted to go to the toilet, but couldn't bring myself to take my bags into the toilet. Probably the biggest negative of being a solo traveler, not having someone to keep an eye on your bags

Checked in finally, ran to the toilet, then explored. Miami airport is huge, so able to spend quite a bit of time wandering, brought a few last minute items and grabbed a Cuban sandwich.

A few snaps within the airport

IMG_2763__1489884242_220.253.160.18.jpg

IMG_2770__1489884337_220.253.160.18.jpg

IMG_2773__1489884433_220.253.160.18.jpg

Boarding finally came around and I was down the back of the bus so was one of the last on. Missed out on a spare seat next to me, and to my great delight old mate had a bit of a bark and an eversion to covering his mouth. So my trip was spent with a jumper wrapped around my head, desperately hoping I wouldn't catch what he had. Didn't work , first 2 weeks back home I carried the cough and sore throat around.

Spied the boys having a bit of a mishap on the tarmac.

IMG_2788__1489884608_220.253.160.18.jpg

Flight from Miami to LA had changed from a A320 to a 777, so was going to take about 45 minutes off the flight time. Good news. Unfortunately spent a bit of time on the tarmac and took off late. About 4 times during the flight a message came over the PA asking for a doctor, so was thinking that we would divert at some stage.

No diversion, and landed at 7.15 instead of the scheduled 7.50. Good news. Then the bad news, gate wasn't available for us, we waited and eventually got to the gate at 8.10. Then over the PA we had to wait until the paramedics came on board. 8.35 finally got off the plane.

Followed the signs to Tom Brady and found myself in the international departure terminal. Wasn't 100% sure that I'd gone the right way, as didn't realise I didn't have to go through security again.

Found the departure boards, and good news again, flights to Australia had all been delayed, due to late arrival of the New York flight. So another 5 hours to waste.

Wandered, grabbed a pink berry, used my free internet time and did a bit of people watching, and hoped some miracle would happen where my name would get called and I would be put up the front of the plane.

Finally boarded, lucked out and got a spare seat next to me. Conversation with the American fella in the window seat, was coming to Oz to recruit tennis players to the University of North Carolina. Being a sport nut, and having recently taken a large interest in the College Football season, able to have a decent conversation about colleges and college sport. He was quite impressed with my knowledge of Colleges when I asked him about his College career. Him - 'I went to FSU' Me - 'The Seminoles right?'

Anyway time to take off, started watching episodes of Impractical Jokers. Unfortunately was into to my third episode from push back until the time we took off.

Ordinary pasta dish, then was time to sleep. Looked at the flight map, last thing I saw was 10.24 remaining. Next thing I woke up, thinking that was a good sleep. Looked at the map, 10.03 to go. Wasn't so good.

Attendants came through the cabin quite often offering food and drinks, some them more often than I did in business on the way over.

6 hours to go and I was fast forwarding the bits I didn't want to watch in Pulp Fiction and screen freezed. Only able to play games for the rest of the time, so mahjong it was.

Hour or so to go, bit of breakfast, grabbed a handful of kit kats from the self serve at the back and readied for landing.

Due to the delays, missed my original flight to Perth, so another 4 hours to wait. This was some marathon, ended up being marginally shy of 42 hours from waking up on the boat, and landing in Perth.

Mundane flight from Brisbane to Perth, dropped off 2 or 3 times for a couple of minutes at a time. Landed and happy to be home.

Re a cruise, at the time was thinking would have liked more time to explore the ports, and also I do struggle to do nothing. However, having been back at work for a couple of months, the thought of sunning myself and stuffing myself with food doesn't seem so bad. Also I sleep better on a boat than I do at any other time.

I would cruise again, but would definitely do more research re the ports and the excursions available from operators not involved with the cruise line. Also wouldn't bother trekking a suit half way around the world, would just head to the buffet on those nights.

Bit of a stop on my traveling for a while, work to do on the house, although I will be heading to Melbourne in April and the Gold Coast in July for work. Thinking Japan/South Korea January, and keen for Croatia October 2018. See how I go.

Thanks for reading.

Enjoyed the read...thanks.

I also lugged a suit around for the 1st cruise but now I just take a jacket. With normal sports pants and no tie there is no problem. It seems a lot of the male diners are now adopting this form of dress on formal nights.

It does differ with the various cruise lines but we prefer HAL
