And how is that worse than a 747 or A380 configured in 3-4-3 ? The 3-3-3 is good compared to EK and NZ (new) configs of 3-4-3 in the 777!
In my limited experience I find the 777 in 3-3-3 configuration a little tight and generally try to avoid it.

There is no way I am getting on a 777 flight with 3-4-3 configuration unless my life depended on it....

I'm the opposite, I find it rather spacious, having this year done both SFO-SIN & MUC-SIN on SQ 77W's - in Y. It depends on the airline. Comparisons (according to SeatGuru) of seat widths show often the seats are same width on different planes (eg BA, TG, CX in the 17-17.5" range), or vary considerably (eg SQ have widths on 777's ranging from 17.5" for regional fleet -19.0" for 77W's). NZ has 17.8" but loses 0.7" per seat (and some aisle space) fitting in an extra seat for the 3-4-3. For comparison on QF, A330 17.2", A380 18.1", QF 767 17.0", QF 747 17.2-17.5".

So what am I saying? It all depends on the width of seat the airlines install, the width of the armrests and the width of the aisles...

A 777-300ER in a 3-3-3 arrangement actually has wider seats and wider aisles than a380 economy. So I think you might be confused....

A380-800 (Qantas)- 3-4-3
31.0'' pitch
18.1'' width

B777-300ER (Virgin)- 3-3-3
32.0'' pitch
18.8'' width

I don't know what it is but I find the seats in economy on Asian carriers a little too narrow for my liking. Am I imagining it? I don't know but do all airlines have the same seat back width, same armrest width?

In my experience

- CX economy on a 777 is too tight
- SQ economy on an A380 (upper deck) was tight, 77W was OKish and the A330 is not too bad
- TG economy is OKish

while the following airlines in various configurations

- QF economy on 747, A330 is quite OK and I have no issues on 767 and 734 domestic while I was not too impressed with 80K on A380
- BA economy is quite OK
- AA economy is quite OK

You must be imagining it! I've done long trips in Y the last 12 months on SQ, JL, QF, EK & TG. EK tightest for sure on long haul, but most others not far behind, and my experience reflects the seatguru figures, SQ 77W certainly feels most spacious (curiously their A380 has same seats - supposedly - but seems a little narrower), and as for QF - I find 767 dom worst (it's funny, when I used to fly SYD-MEL a lot I preferred 767's to 737's but I am now ambivalent between the two). There is also the leg room/width interaction that can affect perceptions of comfort as well.

3-3-3 is something that I am undecided on. Not Great for families, couples or singles (unless you have an aisle).
2-5-2 is better for Couples and families, whilst I think that 2-4-2 is probably the best.

I actually do not mind 2-5-2 at all, as the MH flights between PER-KUL and vv. seem to be very lightly loaded at the right time, meaning the ability to snag 5 or 2.5 seats to yourself!

Does that apply for every airline, or just the two that you are comparing?

FWIW I hate the window seat in any configuration of 3-x-3.

crazydave98 once pointed out that research shows the preference for 3-3-3 by passengers were because you had a greater chance of an aisle seat or the seat next to you empty:
Well they didn't survey me when making that determination ;)

I would prefer to sit in a B seat on a 2-5-2 config than a C seat on a 3-3-3 config. That way a max of 1 person to climb over me rather than a potential for 2. But then I do acknowledge that I may think differently to the majority of people surveyed.

I must think like you as I prefer the 2 seats as well...

Wow, you learn something everyday.

AA has a 2-5-2 config??? (Which routes?)

(My worst nightmare; stuck in the middle on a transcon LAX-JKF flight...)

Any route which is flown by their B777, I've been on one between LAX-MIA.
I found the 2-5-2 a strange config (although I had been on one before on an old L1011), although I did get an aisle seat with no one next to me in the middle section, which was the only saving grace for the flight...

I'm the opposite, I love the window seat, especially in a 3-4-3 config... Then again I do like being able to look out the window and find flights where I'm in the aisle annoying. (There are a couple of exceptions)

All AA's 777 aircraft currently have 2-5-2 conifg in economy. They don't operate LAX-JFK. That route is normally 3-class 767-200 and the occasional 2-class 767-300.

Note that the likelihood of a solo traveler with any Oneworld status and a little nous being "stuck" in a middle seat is very low. And in some ways its better to be in the E seat rather than a A or J seat. At least the E seat has a choice of going left or right to climb over two others to get to the aisle, while the A and J passengers only have one direction to climb out over 2 passengers to get to the aisle. Can also be less claustrophobic for some people as there is no curved wall on one side.

Note that 2-5-2 also gives the airline some more flexibility for seating groups. As such, most of the E seats are assigned to people traveling in groups of 3 or more, and rarely to individual solo travelers (though I am sure some non-travel-savvy solo passengers end up there).

Window seats are great, but having to climb over 2 people is not so great.

Has anyone mentioned that this thread has gone slightly off topic:lol:
