Duty Free Dubai Vs Singapore

Ok now for a really important discussion but firstly my apologies if this has been discussed already.

With the rerouting of QF via Dubai I am wondering how competitive Dubai is versus Singapore

How the range of products compare?

Will we still have this nonsense of not being able to transit through Dubai with Alcahol purchased in another country as happens now in Singapore?

Mrs Ansett and I like our Cognac and well if we can only buy duty free at Australian Prices then the travelling may well be over LOL

Seriously it would be good to get some feedback on this.

Assuming you can buy Duty Free when inbound to Australia at Dubai as a transit passenger?

Hey I travelled to Sin and Dxb on my recent trip and found booze in Sin was slightly cheaper ~5-10%

high end alcohol is cheaper in DXB....Sin is better for mid level and low end spirits.Sin is organised. DXB is a mess...I do not like DXB airport. EK terminal is ok the others are rubbish.

Bought this recently at SIN. One bottle - Rémy Martin Louis XIII Cognac for SGD $3,246.00 which converted to AUD $2,626.11.

And here is my credit card record:

I initially made the mistake of selecting AUD instead of SGD. But had it reversed. Just a button made a AUD $37.27 difference!

It just goes to show:

1. Always select the local currency if you have a choice.

If travelling on EK flights duty free in Dubai often boxes up your alcohol purchase, send it off directly to the plane and you collect it from oversized baggage/special assistance in Australia. A great spacesaver in the overhead lockers, although it is a bit of a leap of faith and possibly time delay at the other end. It will be interesting to see if they offer the same service for QF flights.

So you're allowed to bring Duty Free purchased in Dubai into Australia? Do they seal it and send it to the gate or what happens there? Just checking to not end up with bad surprised on arrival into Sydney...

It would be nice to finally drop this stupid "deliver to the gate" concept and just be able to purchase like everybody else in the world does. Made the mistake of trying to buy booze ~1 hour prior to departure in SIN last week. Too late to be delivered, apparently.

T-1 hour 15 minutes is the cut off, did it at 1 hour 25 last night no issues.

Ah, I understand now, thanks for this! Ouhm- it might only be me, but I've never had to deal with the oversized luggage facility. Is this an easy thing to do or rather a pain in the backside? Where is it, near the luggage belts? Long queue to get your stuff or rather easy? Just interested if that is worth saving some money by buying booze in Dubai rather than on arrival in Sydney...

I wish Hong Kong had some similar arrangement as Dubai. I detest being ripped off buying duty free on arrival. The duty free on arrival is typical Australian corporate monopolistic rent-seeking behaviour.

I have not experienced this myself but read it in another thread on the weekend - if you buy duty free make sure your name is written in large letters or take some sort of special pen that makes it standout, anything over 20 bags and it could take a while to find yours! As for pricing:
