Always best to check the Smart traveller website as has the official advice and links for Aussie passport holders and is up to date.

Your eticket can be in pdf file and must be less than 1 MB

Have all these ready before you apply as it will save a lot of angst! Apparently takes 10 days.
Also they only accept Visa or Mastercard
Cost: USD$50

In the USA yes (as they dont offer true transit and you have to enter the US even if you immediately leave again) but that shouldn't be the case in the UK if your luggage is checked through and you are departing same day as transit passengers do not enter the UK, they stay airside.

re the ETA for the UK I think I've read that transit passengers MUST apply and have approved an ETA....But as I'm not sure I'm seeking confirmation....I do understand that as transit we will not be entering the UK as opposed to the USA where they have no transit facilities

This is just dumb, and increases the suggestion that the entire thing is just a UK Gov money grab.

The only reason I can think if is that, while transit pax don't enter the UK (as transit pax do in the US), they have no exit controls and UK domestic pax mix with international pax airside.

Whilst in Qatar a few days ago it was mentioned on the news that talks are progressing well between countries for a Gulf visa that will allow movement through the ME a lot smoother and should hopefully happen by the end of 2025.
