Earning points on Cathay Pacific

Hey hive brain, does anyone know how to establish how many Qantas points I will earn on Cathay Pacific flights - Economy Light, Sydney - Hong Kong - Paris. And how long it may take for the ooints to credit? For me and my travelling companion?

I have a cunning plan that involves using points to purchase Business Class tickets on Air France from Dublin to Paris to catch our return flights from Paris - HK - Syd in Premium Economy.

If I'm confident enough points will credit within a few days of the Syd-Paris journey, I'll wait. If not, or if it won't be enough, I'll buy some wine from the Qantas Wine Club. (Also, how easy is it to pool points with Qantas? I'll want to use my partner's points too.)

Unless there's a very strange booking class, if economy lite is available it's almost certain to earn 0 on Qantas. Ultimately the most important thing is the booking class for Cathay Pacific as there are lots of 0 earning booking classes.

If you can get points it's pretty easy to transfer. It also may potentially take time to credit.

Personally I'd buy the points and lock it in rather than having the ticket disappear and you getting stuck with 2 pricier one ways (both directions).

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

I've got upcoming flights with CX in N class - I realise this earns zero with QFF, but I've kept the QFF number linked for *O Emerald perks (particularly the additional piece of checked luggage).
Would it work to put in a missing points claim with Cathay to credit to them after the flights?

Would I earn points with Cathay if I join their program?

Probably would, but you need to build up status with CXs AsiaMiles, and be able to put points/miles to that program, and enough points/miles before they expire.
Maybe put to Avios, so that you can collect Aus points on QR, which is VAs partner, putting more points if you fly QR with VFF # in the booking, amassing Avios, and then making a burn, ie, use of Avios for something.
If you are going to fly a lot of CX flights, then probably its worth joining AM.
Otherwise, dont join AM, and dont put a retro claim in.
If you do want to fly CX in future, maybe buy any class that is not N, when and if accrue to QFF.
But to fly CX and earn AM, ie, paying less, then joining AM would be a good idea.

AM last 18 months, the same as QF.
AAdvantage also lasts only 24 months.

I believe they would consider it an attempt to double dip - irrespective of QF# not earning anything, if you fly with that, a claim with CX would most likely be rejected.

You would need to change to a different FF# before boarding to do that imo.

Note a recent anecdote I recall that someone tried this - changing from QR OWE I think to.QFF before a QF flight, and QF charged them for bags as flying with no status)and it was a whole scene at the gate as it was picked up on boarding). Would CX do this? Absolutely no idea.
