Earning points on Cathay Pacific

Hey hive brain, does anyone know how to establish how many Qantas points I will earn on Cathay Pacific flights - Economy Light, Sydney - Hong Kong - Paris. And how long it may take for the ooints to credit? For me and my travelling companion?

I have a cunning plan that involves using points to purchase Business Class tickets on Air France from Dublin to Paris to catch our return flights from Paris - HK - Syd in Premium Economy.

If I'm confident enough points will credit within a few days of the Syd-Paris journey, I'll wait. If not, or if it won't be enough, I'll buy some wine from the Qantas Wine Club. (Also, how easy is it to pool points with Qantas? I'll want to use my partner's points too.)

Unless there's a very strange booking class, if economy lite is available it's almost certain to earn 0 on Qantas. Ultimately the most important thing is the booking class for Cathay Pacific as there are lots of 0 earning booking classes.

If you can get points it's pretty easy to transfer. It also may potentially take time to credit.

Personally I'd buy the points and lock it in rather than having the ticket disappear and you getting stuck with 2 pricier one ways (both directions).

I've got upcoming flights with CX in N class - I realise this earns zero with QFF, but I've kept the QFF number linked for *O Emerald perks (particularly the additional piece of checked luggage).
Would it work to put in a missing points claim with Cathay to credit to them after the flights?

Would I earn points with Cathay if I join their program?

Probably would, but you need to build up status with CXs AsiaMiles, and be able to put points/miles to that program, and enough points/miles before they expire.
Maybe put to Avios, so that you can collect Aus points on QR, which is VAs partner, putting more points if you fly QR with VFF # in the booking, amassing Avios, and then making a burn, ie, use of Avios for something.
If you are going to fly a lot of CX flights, then probably its worth joining AM.
Otherwise, dont join AM, and dont put a retro claim in.
If you do want to fly CX in future, maybe buy any class that is not N, when and if accrue to QFF.
But to fly CX and earn AM, ie, paying less, then joining AM would be a good idea.

AM last 18 months, the same as QF.
AAdvantage also lasts only 24 months.

I believe they would consider it an attempt to double dip - irrespective of QF# not earning anything, if you fly with that, a claim with CX would most likely be rejected.

You would need to change to a different FF# before boarding to do that imo.

Note a recent anecdote I recall that someone tried this - changing from QR OWE I think to.QFF before a QF flight, and QF charged them for bags as flying with no status)and it was a whole scene at the gate as it was picked up on boarding). Would CX do this? Absolutely no idea.

Sorry, another question from me :)

I've booked a business cash fare with Cathay on their website (Class P according to the e-ticket) and have entered my QFF number in the CX MMB portal.

Previously it was my Asiamiles account number however I'd prefer to have my QFF number in there as Asiamiles isn't as / that useful to me.

Looking at the QFF Earn tables, I'd be eligible for some points and SCs - is this correct?

I've masked my route, but this is what comes up on the Qantas website for my route :

I'm assuming that I'd get 3k QFF points and 120SCs from this Cathay booking?

Sorry for the question, as I've only ever redeemed classic reward seats for CX business, but this time round it's a cash fare due to no award seats being available :)

Looks right... Did you pay by Amex with the recent cashback offer?

Just wanting to see if I've done it correctly (entered my QFF number in the CX MMB portal) as I've only ever redeemed classic reward seats with QFF points for CX business, but this time round it's a cash fare due to no award seats being available :)
Yes, P class is an earning fare class for CX so that’s correct. Provided its not a CX codeshare on a non-OneWorld airline.

Why is the route a state secret?

You need to go to partner earn, in QFF and look if P class, on partner earns within QFF.
I think its been mentioned, that CX is quite tight, some classes do not earn.
Will check and see for you.
===
Lucky, partner earn P class is in QFF "business" so yes, you will earn, as its an eligible subclass.
---
U is upgrade, so no earn on that, except if flying QF as a PC member, where you will earn some SC.
---
Most people who book J, will go into a subclass or discJ, ie, C/D/I or luck J.
J would most likely be the most expensive subclass, flexJ, on the most right hand side of the fare list on the QF website.
In my QF flying, I have never snagged a real J, always discJ, C/D/I.

J is a class of its own:

The link to the earn category table for CX (which does include P class) is already in the original post.

It's rare for a partner Biz fare to not earn at all with QFF (even MH earns something).

It's usually only the discounted whY fares that don't make the earning cut.

Generally speaking you'll always earn if flying partner Premium Economy or above. You'll earn "full" status credits on flights unless it's a route where Qantas operates the route or sometimes if it's part of a 1-stop routing to Europe. There's a few other exceptions but that's generally the rule.

I reckon your route is very short intra-asia (e.g. TPE-HKG) and long intra-asia (e.g. HKG-TYO or SIN). But yeah, those routes are good because they earn "full status credits" as opposed to the CX routes to Australia (ex. Perth).

Thanks everyone :) just wanted to double check that I did everything okay / correct as I usually only book award seats 🤭

Ah, no.

I can’t think of any routes where partner earn SCs are the same as regular QF code earn?

Well if we think about CX PER HKG or HKG TPE (120 and 80 respectively), the earn is in line with a Qantas flight of similar length (QF SYD HKG is 120, SYD PER is 80). It's just the competing routes such as the aforementioned SYD HKG where you earn half (60).

Yes, PER is an outlier (and ADL to some extent), so DOH on QR is quite good but still less than PER-DXB on QF code flying EK.

Intra Asia is also generally good but less than it was pre “Simpler & Fairer” (TM).
