Tremors from Myanmar earthquake felt across South-East Asia

The magnitude-7.7 earthquake hit near Mandalay in central Myanmar, according to the US Geological Survey, at a depth of only 10 kilometres.

Also reported 30-storey skyscraper under construction for government offices collapsed in Bangkok on Friday, trapping 43 workers, police and medics said.

For Myanmar, one could hope the quake might shake up the dictatorship , sadly it will just cause more pain and suffering.
The building collapse in Thailand was neat.. no earthquake pendulum there… and perhaps not much rebar…..

A very active earthquake zone with a number of large known historical quakes. This is the 'shakemap' of yesterday's main earthquake with historical activity as the other circles.

Reporting in from Myanmar.

Earthquake was unusually strong and long down here in Yangon - so we knew it was big before we knew where the epicentre was.

Some updates:
Both Mandalay (MDL/VYMD) and Naypyitaw (NYT/VYNT) Airports have suffered significant damage to infrastructure and will be closed to any commercial flights for some time (1-3 months)

Yangon International Airport (RGN/VYYY) operating as normal for commercial and military flights.

Epicentre was just outside Mandalay, the country's second largest city, nearby Sagaing just over the river. With a larger population centre and numerous high rise buildings, bridges, landmarks being heavily affected and will be the focus of international news feeds.
However Naypyitaw has also seen significant damage, even with a lower population base and not many tall buildings. Hospitals, Hotels and Ministry buildings along with main roads have been severely damaged or destroyed.
