Hi,

I have an award seat booking which was originally in economy class then some time later I changed it on-line to business class.

I spoke to the call centre as I was wishing to revert to economy class with a request to fast track the points difference refund as I wished to make an additional booking. Call centre advised that a “downgrade to economy class would result in forfeit of the additional points used for business class”.

I decided not to proceed with the change however I am not sure if what I was told is accurate and seek guidance from this forum. Is it a downgrade? Is it not a cancellation of a booking then a rebooking assuming economy class award seats are available?

I am tempted to cancel myself on-line and then re-book in economy class but I am now fearful that the points refund would only be equivalent to economy class.

Can anyone help please?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Provided this is a regular award booking and travel hasn't yet commenced, you are entitled to a refund of the points if you downgrade.

I think it depends how OP has changed from economy to business - whether it was processed as a classic upgrade, or whether they just changed the booking from X to U, and also when the flight is due to depart.

FWIW classic upgrades are non-refundable after T-24.

If you cancel your upgrade request or fail to board a flight for which you have redeemed points for a Classic Upgrade Reward within 24 hours of the scheduled flight departure, you will forfeit the points used and a seat may no longer be available in your original booked class.

Hi sudoer, I changed the booking class, it wasn't a classic upgrade. BTW the flight is in July 2022.
