Iberia air has another Spanish Groupon sale going at the moment.

That's pretty good, but I prefer to pay the maximum amount of cash when redeeming an avios booking on BA. Gives a similar "price" to purchasing avios on special.

Just for clarity Clifford, when redeeming an award with points and cash with BA you get a a good deal versus say Krisflyer who tend to give no value for the points used?

Different schemes ... Krisflyer allows you to use points to reduce the cash required for a cash booking (at about 0.9c per point last time I looked). BA lets you use cash to reduce the number of Avios required to make an award booking, so needs award inventory available. Can’t remember the value. Don’t think they offer Avios to part pay cash bookings.

Sorry, but they do. Just try it...

That'll teach me to be lazy.

One thing about Avios is the variability in pricing though. The more points you use the less valuable they are. In the example I saw Take $55 off ... 3000 pts, take $220 off (= 4 x $55) it's 18,000 pts (3000 pt x 6). 1.83 c/point (good value) down to 1.22 c/point.

When you make an avios booking, the more cash you opt to pay, the cost of "purchasing" each avios in this way reduces.

For example, here's the cost of an avios booking HKG-KTM in business on Cathay Dragon:

Total Price (Including all taxes, fees, and carrier charges)
20000 Avios + £ 32.00

More pricing options You can select when paying
  • 18200 Avios + £ 52.00
  • 16400 Avios + £ 67.00
  • 14600 Avios + £ 82.00
  • 12800 Avios + £ 92.00
  • 11000 Avios + £ 107.00
A bit a quick arithmetic will show that it's more cost-effective to pay 11000 Avios + £ 107.00 than any other option. So you're effectively "purchasing" avios at 0.83 British pence each.

This approach tends to maximise the value of your avios.

If you want to use them on BA site bookings you have to transfer them and you can't do that until 3 months after you've created your Iberia Plus account.

Sometimes IB can have some super specials... recently they were offering 25K avios USA-Spain (and v.v) for business class one way. If I'd had some points in IB I would have snapped a seat!

I read one of the comments alluding to this. Do we have a link to anything more concrete?
Haven't seen anything definite, but there's various references to it on Flyertalk by apparently knowledgeable insiders. Talk is of it possibly happening around the end of the year. Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Not sure it is concrete!.

If I could count the number of times people have posted similar comments across the various FF programs I'd be extremely rich. And of course they are usually eventually right, the trouble is that eventually sometimes means 2 or 3 years and think of all the good deals you miss in the meantime.
