G'day All,

Just a quick question, I've just booked a reward business ticket from Perth-Sydney-Albury in Jan and i need 2 more Virgin flights to go Plat, So will these 2 flights go towards my Eligible sectors ?? (First time booking a reward flight)

Thanks for your time

Welcome to AFF

Unfortunately any flight purchased using points is not classed as an eligible sector

From their T&C's

Eligible Sector means a flight journey from an origin to a destination:
(a) that has been flown;
(b) that has been purchased using cash or credit;
(c) that has not been purchased in whole or in part using Points; and
(d) where Virgin Australia is the marketing carrier (This means that the flight number starts with a DJ or VA prefix).

So the idea was to get to Platinum prior to our USDM trip in September 2013 to take advantage of luggage allowances, better seats, etc. Not a problem. Currently sitting on 785 SC's and with the current points redemption offer, booked an A7 run from the new Status Run spreadsheet with a paid direct return flight with Jnr#1 pooling to my account. All good - should land just over 1000 sc's. Then I had one of those sub-conscience moments at OMG o'clock that told me I won't have enough sectors to get to Platinum - I'm going to be 1 sector short -(currently on 4).

Of course I start searching the AFF bible and then realise that redemption seats aren't counted in eligible sectors either. So now I'm 3 sectors short. I'm going to have to do either 2 direct return runs or 1 run with 2 sectors. I was seriously looking at the A7 return run prior to Sabre which was a very reasonable price at the flexi rate. Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda.

Not a lot on offer from the Cash Runs spreadsheet.

Any suggestions for minimum $$ 2 sector runs from MEL?

The perennial favourite has been MEL-OOL-MEL in saver lite giving 30SCs and 2 sector but if elligble sectors are the important part, any short hop for you and jnr will achieve it.

Jnr's hop doesn't count/pool for eligible sectors. I'm going to have to go this alone. All the 2 leg sectors are ridiculously priced post Sabre.

Yes, I forgot that bit.

What about MEL-SYD-OOL-MEL or MEL-ADL-SYD-MEL (separate PNRs).

I think MEL-CBR-SYD-MEL would be too expensive.

Thanks for your assistance.

I chucked a few scenarios into a spreadsheet this morning and the cheapest run will in fact be the MEL-CBR-SYD-MEL run at $239. The next cheapest is the MEL-SYD-OOL-MEL run at $249 which reaps an extra 5 SC's (cheapeast fare) for the additional $10. All flights on separate PNR's.

The extra SCs will most likely be lost during status upgrade anyway, so go the cheapy (less time wasted too). I'm a bit surprised a CBR inclusive run has trumped it but @ an average of $80 per eligible sector, not too bad under the circumstances.

Plus I'll get to see the new lounge in CBR :)

I have had 4 award segments booked and flown in the last 3 Weeks that posted SC's under the promo.

They also counted as eligible segments!

Fantastic. I will earn 480 SCs (x2 after pooling) on SQ flight numbers during the next couple of weeks. So this means I can just do some domestic award sectors to clock up my eight sectors for the year. Platinum... done.

Thanks serfty.

Please wait - I am double checking that ...

Yep - it's fine and they are indeed counting.

I had some pooled which don't count ... but I had to cross check.

sefty, were they any seat or reward seat redemptions?

If reward redemptions, did they also give points?

And if so, were the points on the normal value or on the pay component?

This is doing my head in. I just booked a revenue 3 sector flight assuming that my 2 sector J redemption wasn't eligible.

Yes, we're all in the same boat. Nothing in the VA blurb about the reward promo mentions that they'll count as eligible sectors (or earn points), but the new earn for any seat awards, do accrue SCs, eligible sectors and points (IIRC).

We'll just have to wait for sefty to clarify which type of award he flew and remember, even if under a reward seat booking, it may have been a mistake (heavens only knows we've seen a few of them lately).

EDIT: Cross posting with serfty.........robd may wish to attempt to cancel the booking made. VA has from time to time done that without charge when an error was made and advised within a short time!

From their T&C's

Hmm

Those T&Cs look a little out of date, but even when updated they seem to exclude reward flights. I guess the promo changes things.
