I am in the middle of planning a post retirement trip from Melbourne to Europe and return. When I ask the Emirates booking site for a Melbourne to Paris return In economy I get a reasonable fare of about $4000 for 2 of us. When I try to add in stopovers in Singapore and Hong Kong the fare goes up to about $38,000.

Is is this normal in your experience? Is there a way around this?

Have you checked the routings? You've probably added additional flights if they aren't connecting airports.

To be honest I've found Emirates to be the most logical website I've ever used.

It may be defaulting to a series of one-way flights hence the massive cost escalation.

What was the exact routing?

It looks like Emirates does not have a route from Hong Kong to Melbourne, so that is probably upsetting the booking engine. Lately it has been refusing to show me flights for that sector, whereas a week ago it did.

I was looking at Melbourne to Singapore to Barcelona, then Paris to Hong Kong to Melbourne. I'm not married to Emirates, I was just checking it. If I wanted to fly Emirates for the Asia to Europe flights I could look at Jetstar or similar for the hops out of and into Melbourne.

Try BA for that routing. Does mean a transit in LHR in both directions.
