Emirates Cancels Singapore to Melbourne Flights

So as I understand it we are not yet sure if EK404/405 will be cancelled the whole way through (eg DXB-SIN-MEL) or just the SIN-MEL legs?

Flew EK405 late last year on the B777 with the 2-2-2 J class, and it was a pleasant flight.

I believe it would just be the SIN-MEL legs according to the CCCS release

I see they’re still selling for flights in early September 2025. I’m hoping they keep loading these dates until they determine an actual ending date. Was looking at booking awards for early October 2025 and would be happy if that still ended up being possible and they just moved us onto QF (albeit an inferior product).

Notice that 4 September 2025 has now become available to book on this flight. 2x J + 1xF awards available on QFF as well. Probably wishful thinking but do hope this continues to be the case in 4 weeks time.

Given I would be booking QFF awards hoping that QF would also shift us to their own metal?

Unfortunately not. As per my post above, EK will notify its partners that the flight has been cancelled. It will be up to the partners to arrange a refund of the points.

Any alternative plans will need to be based on award availability. If you are a platinum or higher, you could request the release of award inventory, but of course no guarantees.

Partner airlines have no obligation to provide alternative flights, or to accommodate you on their own aircraft.

Interesting. Id been thinking a similar flight timing might have been possible for EK at WSI.. but maybe not.

Based on Qantas attitudes i think its highly unlikely they would make Qantas seats available in premium cabins for any of their reward flights cancelled on partner airlines. I mean there is a reason they rely so heavily on partner airlines for reward seats - so that they can shift redemptions to others at a lower opportunity cost. I hope you are right but I'm not confident

Such a shame. But EK do draw lines in the sand, post covid it has been rare to see this route (ex-SiN anyway) selling in economy sub $1k (SGD) prices. They could probably fill the economy cabin better if they had $700-800 fares but they clearly don’t want to do that. Pre-Covid such fares were common and with the better timetable (18:00 departure from MEL during winter, 19:00 during summer) it was a much more popular service.

I much prefer the day flight down from SIN and SQ are usually a difficult option as their day flights get filled by ex-Europe traffic. Leaving Scoot and at least in the short term TK.

If they are legally allowed to pull the pin by AU Gov then it just comes down to commercial numbers. Further out they go the more empty the planes the less people disrupted less headaches. I check my July 25 flight last night and its almost empty still. Which is not good for me because its an easy option for them to cancel it.

Interestingly EK has not dropped any additional Premium J or F seats for the SIN - MEL leg on QFF which started getting me very worried

They might reroute you via DXB! I mean, if you really push you might be able to get that, if the long way around is your thing.

Well my wife is in F & im in J, so I wouldnt care as long as she is in F & im in J..... BUT is this really something they would do?

Would make route home from Europe long but interesting. Currently booked emirates Lyon to Dubai J Class on new A350 and then Dubai to Sing on A380 J. From there we have QFF points home from Sing to Melb J Class Emirates 777. I can't see Emirates helping as QFF leg is not really their problem. Fun times

As others have noted, and in my experience with QF over the last few years, I've rarely managed to get Qantas to consistently rebook me on their own metal for flights they cancelled that were already on their own metal without a massive fight.

Even conscious that one likes a Debbie Downer, I wouldn't set my expectations much above nothing to see QF re-accommodate anyone on their own metal (or anyone else's) for EK's cancellations unless there's already reward availability. And I definitely wouldn't go about booking any new trips in hopes they do unless I was 100% prepared to go through the refund rigamarole whenever they get around to formalising the cancellations.

I'm seeing quite reasonable availability on the SIN-MEL route in First for the remainder of this year, particularly the second half of November and the second half of December.

If I were you I'd take the bull by the horns, find an appropriate date and book. The worst that can happen is that the flights will be cancelled before then and you'll receive a full refund.

Definitely considering that too!

And i only found out very last minute

I m hoping like hell that another destination+ origin will become or there is without the stupid amounts of taxes in J/F?

No, Emirates seems to not impose carrier charges on many of its fifth freedom flights. I was looking earlier this year at its fifth freedom flights out of the USA and they, too, have very low carrier charges.

It exists, just most people that stumble upon it are keeping their mouths shut for the most part because it'll make the travel blog rounds real quick and they might lose it.
