eek, that is a delightful time for a flight.

TBH I wouldn't be in a hurry to get to the airport... It will be quiet and there won't be much for you to do except enjoy the EK lounge's offerings, which are okay, but not as good as the F lounge ;)

JT. The QF lounge is closed at that time of the day / night. EK lounge is available till flight EK409 QF8409 departs but closes immediately afterwards or did in July. The lounge is nice, with views of the gates etc. Good EK food and wines, Champs etc. As Penegal said it was almost dead in the airport when I was there connecting from SYD, your on DLS time so they will be open till then anyway. Will check my phone to see if i have any pics and post.
You have the option of having a seat by the windows (dark outside) an ottoman and they give you a blanket if you want to sleep till your flight. See pic 1 by the window / flowers. The Lounge lady (she is very nice) said she would wake me before the flight, so no chance of missing it.

If your on your way to KUL DBX have some food in the lounge the Y "snack - ham role" they give you after take-off is not worth the wait.
NB to those QP members, you will not get access and saw a few groups being turned away.

I enjoyed the food in the EK Melbourne lounge when I was there last month. The chicken and leek pies were nice!

I'm going to be on QF8409/EK409 too, towards the end of April at the start of a holiday, and the departure time is currently scheduled for 02:40. Having just reached WP (hooray!) I was disappointed to see that the QF F lounge will be closed at that time of day. Was wondering if there will still be plenty of dinner-like food in the EK lounge a couple of hours before the flight?

Absolutely. I did that flight yesterday, and the food was freshly served at midnight when the lounge opened. Oh, and the Veuve was cold too. ;)

Edit: The QF J lounge is open until 11.30 (when the last QR flight leaves) in case you get to the airport early.

I'm also going to be taking QF8409 MEL to KUL leaving at 0240. Will they let you check in for this flight maybe 4 hours before? Try and get some time in the QF J lounge before moving to the EK lounge.

Check in online, and you should be fine. I think the last QF flight leaves about 1900 so you would not be able to check in at the airport until the EK checkin opens.

There maybe a short period (maybe 1/2 hour) between the J lounge closing and the EK lounge opening.

Forgot to mention that I'd be checking in a bag. Guess it all comes down to how early EK open check in for that flight.

Thought you can't check in at QF when fly a EK metal.

That is true ! :( No QF F lounge MEL/SYD checkin :(

So what is the current consensus for breakfast @ MEL ?

QF F lounge
EK F lounge

From memory go to EK for a drink then QF F for table service food ?

Don't know why you would go to EK?

QF F has table service and 3 x Champagnes...
