Emirates Cancels Singapore to Melbourne Flights

I don’t think the new 3am departure time did it any favours
Darn. You're right about the 3am departure time, but the 10am departure time of the SIN-MEL flight is a great way to experience Emirates First Class, given the daytime flight and the extremely low carrier fees when using points.

I've got a First Class SIN-MEL flight booked for January and I'm now waiting with bated breath to find out whether it'll go ahead!

Similarly I have one in early Dec.
No announcement on when yet will see what EK does about it.

If they rebook to SQ F, I wouldn't mind .. or if they reroute via DXB...

Probably too much capacity with Turkish recently joining the fray.

TK is often around $700 return.

One would assume they would continue to the end of the Jan School Hols.

I actually thought the route did quite well, it funnels pax around the network that are on multi city trips, and for those who wish to stop in Asia en route to Australia.

I agree that the outbound timing was pretty average, I recall this flight was a A380 at one point?

From 2016:

Would they actually rebook affected passengers? Or would they simply give us refunds and tell us that we're on our own?
No they'd always give you alternative options (or a refund). They wouldn't just refund with no option.

I suspect the 3am departure is a bit light on pax especially premium pax.

According to The Straits Times article, seat loads were apparently only averaging around 50%.

According to The Straits Times article, seat loads were apparently only averaging around 50%.

According to Australia's BITRE, in June 2024, inbound SIN to MEL there were 2,681 passengers conveyed on EK from Singapore to Australia (effectively MEL) with outbound seeing 3,968. That's a median of 89 passengers inbound and 132 outbound each day (asuming there were 30 flights operated each way).

This data excludes the many passengers who'd be staying on this 'direct' (note: not 'nonstop') flight to/from the UAE, so we can't calculate the seat occupancy percentage for these DXB-MEL-DXB flights.

For all its routes into and out of Oz, in June 2024 EK filled 77.4 per cent of inbound available seats and 94.4 per cent of outbound available seats, as June is a peak month for travel to Europe/UK. 94.4pc is extremely close to 'full' given there's always up to five per cent of passengers on any airline who are no-shows (missed the flight/was sick/died etc.)

Be nice if they released some more award seats then
Well, there's generally Economy available and on the two occasions I've been wanting First availability I've found it (admittedly a very small sample size, I know!). As for Emirates 777 Business class, personally that's not an award I'd be happy to use my points on if I could avoid it.

Booked EK F on this route with QF points for April.

Assuming it'll be canned by then which is a shame, is it probable they'll offer to switch me to QF J and get a points difference refund from QFF? Or will they just cancel given it's a points ticket?

Wouldn't mind being switched to QF F SIN - SYD then to MEL but doubt they'll do that!

No they'd always give you alternative options (or a refund). They wouldn't just refund with no option.

I see they’re still selling for flights in early September 2025. I’m hoping they keep loading these dates until they determine an actual ending date. Was looking at booking awards for early October 2025 and would be happy if that still ended up being possible and they just moved us onto QF (albeit an inferior product).
