Good afternoon

Have a couple of basic questions for the community as I am a new member.

1. Have a trip to Europe ex Brisbane later in the year, flying a mixture of Qantas and Emirates in Economy. Can you pre purchase seats with Emirates as you can with Qantas , being 6'7" I usually prefer to sit near the exit areas.

2. As a general rule, international hotel bookings usually better deals thru the websites or travel agents.

Regards

1. Emirates do charge for seat selection. Unlike Qantas, they don't pre-sell exit row seats. .. They are generally only available for airport check-in

Can't help much with 2, it is such a YMMV; benefits of having chain status, promotions etc. can outweigh other considerations.

Welcome aboard

Depends on the type of room, I have found directly with the hotel for the better room

Cant do any harm to ask a TA to price the rooms up, in some instances I have found they can recommend a better hotel

As serfty mentions, you need to be at the airport early for check-in. A friend of mine did this, arriving 4 hours before and lined up. They got like one of the last exit row seats. But it was FOC.

For someone in sydney. Arriving 4 hours before a 0600 EK flight to dubai is not my cupatea. That would mean I have to get up at midnight.

Well - yes. But depends how badly you want the exit :) It's only an hour earlier than most would turn up anyway. At 6'7 I'd probably do it!

I have a tricky Emirates seating question; I have a EK ticketed itinerary with the first leg on QF. Has just passed T-48 so went to do free seat selection, but it won't let me do OLCI as the first leg is on QF - no way to even pay for seat selection of the EK site or app as it says 'seat selection pre-booking is closed', and no way to select seat on EK metal on the QF site.

Any way around these technical limitations? No status on either airline I am afraid.

You could try and call EK and ask. Can you get a seat map and see what may be available before you call?
