Emirates shameless efforts to "steal" Qantas top flyers

Doesn't this tempt you to fly other airlines more ?
It certainly would me if other airlines are upgrading me more than the actual airline whom I have gained status with/shown loyalty to.

It doesn't tempt me because it would cross my mind that once I become a FF of the other airline, it would give "my" upgrades away to FFs of other airlines that it was trying to poach. But come to think of it, maybe the reason op ups are quite rare on QF and points upgrades aren't guaranteed because QF is busily giving away upgrade seats to other FFs than its own

Exactly; but only once you do become a FF of the other airline.
Good things don't last forever. Reports thus far indicate that the airlines try 2-3 times before just giving up.
So why not try it with the one airline for say two trips then take up membership (or don't) and try the next airline.
Rinse and repeat with EK, EY, CX, BA, SQ, MH, etc.

I can't see what you'd have to lose.

I just can't get that sloppy piloting effort out of Melbourne a few years ago that was a potential disaster for them......and all on board.

i have flown their premium classes and prefer the natural warmth of qantas when they get it right.

+1

I had done J in both and prefers to sit on / served by Qantas plane / staff (A380).

The mini bars are a waste of space, elbow rooms non-existent, requests for drinks acknowledged but forgotten, staff perpetually looking harried and rushing about with some struggling to carry two fully loaded meal trays to J pax, stream of J pax using the F lav with some ripping the curtain from its sides to access the F area with impunity from FAs....

The 2-2-2 seat arrangement on QF is far open (less cluttered) than EK's zigzag pattern where some seats are inferior to others in terms of legroom (same price, of course).

But in terms of market share, clearly EK is winning the numbers game so it looks like I am in the minority camp here.

Having recently taken my first EK flight (777-300) I have to say the service was impeccable and not overbearing. Obviously no chance of an op up as no F on this flight. Will see if I get lucky on the return. The seat however was not as good as the Mk II although on par with the Mk I's. I do like the fact that you can watch the vid all the way to the gate though.

also in the last 2 years having flown QF, BA,CX, AA and now EK I'm yet to receive an op up was a WP. Had more success with those as a QF NB. I don't expect them but just an observation.

I'm on QF codeshare with EK Tuesday, SIN-BNE.
If they give me an upgrade, I'll take it and gladly fill out their form!

Hmmmm interesting.
Maybe my idea was flawed after all lol.

Well I just came across something about EK vs QF that may convince me to join EK.

I noticed that EK allows upgrades on any class of fare, whereas QF generally only allow it for full fare economy. Now I almost never pay full fare economy, preferring to wait for specials. This means that my QFF points are generally only useful for flight redemptions and not flight upgrades.

It seems to me that I should be considering switching all points earning on QF and earning them on EK instead. Given the EK-QF tie up, this means that I can book my international flights on EK and therefore regardless of whether it is QF or EK metal, I will be able to use my EK points for upgrade even if it's not a full fare economy.

Doing so would forgo SCs, but I don't earn enough SCs for status anyway.

I just realised all of this is probably irrelevant to this thread since it's about EK's efforts to steal QF top flyers. I think EK could care less about NBs QF members!

QF allow upgrades from discount economy and up, just not from the deeply discounted fare bucket sometimes available. We have bought sale fares and have had points upgrades no worries. It is always worth checking the fare restrictions when looking to book.

Are the points amounts more though?

By "Qantas top flyers" are you referring to Qantas premium international travellers? How about those flying economy? Would Emirates still try to poach them?

And I would also imagine those who do most of the flying domestically and get to Platinum One would not be interested in Emirates status.

flew SYD-DXB in J recently, after a few minutes it was obvious that I was some sort of marketing target as WP first time on EK metal, was asked a few questions, surprised that those around me were not asked the same questions. Asked a couple of people around me what FF program they were with and what status, neither had any status, just flying J as a one of trip, guess that there is an tablet somewhere among the FAs which churns out information of who to ask and what to ask.

Seems as though EK only highly value certain high status QF pax in Premium cabins. Myselfy & SWMBO (WP) travelling in whY had no special treatment except for a greeting & express card (PER-DXB)

Then travelling in F (DOH-DXB) greeting but no other communication & J (DXB-PER) was the same as previous times. Nothing special in my eyes.

This was in late april, early may.

All I can say is 'poach away' on my first EK flight in J at the weekend!! QF A380 to Dubai, then onwards on an EK 777 with an F cabin that currently looks pretty empty on expert flyer,

I can't see what you'd have to lose.

The status gained by flying with the same airline as much as you can. That's the status that kicks in to make things a bit easier and more comfortable when you don't happen to be flying J/F. If you always fly J/F then there is another thread somewhere about whether status is valuable or not in that case.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone else being upset at being upgraded to F.
and you still haven't. Nowhere in my post do I complain about the upgrade. In fact my post contains no complaints at all. I suggest you re-read and you will see that I am commenting with interest on the implications for the relationship between EK and QF of EK (possibly) targeting QF top flyers for conversion

They don't need to poach you given the lack of QFi flights out of PER ;)

Sounds like they were all doing their job to make you very comfortable! Though, I think one mention of their FF program may have been sufficient...

Pushiness isn't very relaxing....
