I booked a return business class airfare on Etihad MEL AKL but then downgraded it to economy after deciding the $1400 fare difference wasn't worth it.

I get an email today offering a business upgrade (one way) for $150. Needless to say I leapt on it.

Does this happen often? I've never encountered it before.

I assume you mean Emirates.

It's becoming more and more common on the routes ex Australia to New Zealand and Asia (BKK and SIN.) More so on the Trans-Tasmans though. I've regularly seen it BNE-AKL.

Never seen it on the Long Haul. I guess that makes sense though; people are more likely to pay full price for J on a long haul than a 3-4 hour flight.

I got the same offer on the return journey (except this time it was $150NZD so around $120AUD). So I flew business return MEL AKL for $710. A darn site better than the original $1800 fare!

I had the offer on both legs of MEL - AKL, $130 local currency of the departing country. I too went for it, and even got upgraded to F on the way to AKL.

Was the cabin full up front? My last MEL-AKL was completely empty up front.

If you get the offer - just take it!

Emirates J (and F) beat Qantas/ AirNZ any time over the tasman.

I would take the offer immediately if Emirates offer me this. Just wondering what kind of criteria are required for Emirates makes such offers?

It would only happen if the cabin was quite empty I'd imagine. First they'd probably ask all the Status FFs in Y (possibly complementary) then email the rest from a random ballet or something. Just make sure you have internet/email access because you can't do it at the airport!

I'm not sure if they ask FFs first, as that was my first trip on Emirates. I got my J upgrade emails about 2 days before the flight.

No FF on the flight? Just because you got one doesn't mean much.

I'd bet it would be on aircraft type as well. AKL-SYD EK A380 was jam packed in J, because they have lots of seats to fill and they can probably send quite a few emails. As for the A345 or 777, fewer seats means fewer emails<FF.

I'm not saying there are no FFs on the flight, in fact, the other gentleman that got up to F is their top tier FF, and J was full. So I'm sure there would have been others FFs on the flight.

It's not like I was going to complain about the upgrade anyway so just enjoyed on the flight. :D
