Emirates upgrades

Hi guys,

Would appreciate answers to 2 quick question regarding Emirates upgrades. I’m more used to the Etihad system but am checking for friends.

Re upgrade availability, can I presume availability if there is an outright award booking available on the Emirates site like with I do with Etihad? Normally I would also confirm this with the airline just in case but this is where I start.

Also can single legs of a journey be upgraded, like with Etihad?

You have a good chance on Emirates as they overbook, a lot. One flight out of Sydney by 50 passengers! Overbooking means people will be moved up so even a little status can get an upgrade.

Just to be clear I am talking about paying for Economy Flex fares, and then using miles to upgrade instantly via Manage My Booking.

Any experience here?

We recently used Emirates from Bangkok through Dubai to Larnaca then Malta economy return. Emirates contacted us by email a few days ahead of time to offer upgrades on some sectors. As a rule of thumb.. about $100 per hour of flying. The upgrades are for flight only... no access to lounge. As our flights were all daytime, it didn't seem worthwhile.
