Engineer Strike

Geez.... i dont even have a guaranteed payrise every year of 5-6%, and 6 weeks annual leave, and travel benefits....

don't these engineers realize that they can be replaced? or worse off... lose their job completely because of a couple union leaders .

Bingo. If people actually knew how much the engineers get and how little work some of them do, the sympathy would go out the window. Plenty of people know how much of a free ride they get - they are very well paid and get good benefits. If anyone is getting a payrise, it should be the pilots.

Still, I don't get unions - striking isn't going to change the situation, if anything it will make the management more angry and more likely to cut them in the future.

The head of the union doesn't exactly cover himself with glory - his claim the QF32 engine explosion was due to outsourcing was a classic.......

All a strike will do is get the public off side. How many bookings this week for LAX for example will now be switched to V Australia.

Being a CEO, all those I know in a similar position to myself agree paying a fair wage with reasonable increases is fine but some workers just go over the top and have an over inflated view of their own importance. Far to many Union boss's are out to make a name for themselves so they can go up the ladder, that they create a situation to become known. Look at Bill Shorten for example.

The claim in that lot that gets me is the free flights at the exclusion of paying passengers, what the; without them how does the company pay you, idiot.

My kids are both trainee A Techs with the military so I am pleased their job has a good future with a good wage, I only hope that greed today does not see their opportunity head over sea's.

Perhaps that’s an aircraft that was last serviced in Australia and the union didn’t want that getting out, so have told the papers not to run the story ;)

Yeah because Rupert Murdoch and news Ltd are so supportive of unions.

They seem to pick their side more often than not.

I can't agree. Read any of the political reporting and unions usually get caned by News. (if we are talking more often than not) When it comes to qantas vs unions it must be a hard choice and hopefully they get indigestion over it.

Bingo!

(We were all waiting for the "Union Bosses" line, weren't we???)

Yes, be a real PITA...

Hopefully everyone at JQ and QF turn up for work on the 19-21 May and 7-8 August for my travel plans... :)

19th May in particular. Damn code-share, I didn't want to fly Qantas but that's who I ended up on despite what my ticket says.
I'm anxiously watching the pilots who are up to something on that day.

A quick check shows Qantas 17 "Engineering Incidents" this year. EK 2, SIN 2.
Lets all go on strike for lower fares !

There are plenty of overseas engineers ;)

I appreciate your points regarding not knowing the whole story. I personally though do not believe that anyone has the right to withdraw labour without the employer having the right to then withdraw employment.

Don't you mean that you don't agree with it? Like it or not, it's a fact, so it's difficult to see that you don't believe in it. It's looking likely that I'll be affected personally next week, not at all happy about it but there ya go.

from the SMH online:

"Qantas has cancelled 31 flights and will delay another 46 services across the country during its morning peak tomorrow, blaming it on an hour-long stoppage by its licensed aircraft engineers.
The airline said the cancelled flights would affect about 2500 passengers"

A Quick check where?

If that's Oz related info then it's an indictment on EK / SQ given the relative paucity of services they have when compared to the number that Qantas have.

Hi,

Check out Aviation Herald - lists incidents world wide.
The figures were mostly for International Flights I think.
Of course it would be necessary to check fleet nos and such.

Cheers

Someone pointed that out on avherald, however Simon does not guarantee that all incidents make it to that site.

Sky News is reporting tomorrow's engineers' strike has been called off and flights will go ahead as originally planned.

I think that people consider agreeing with some "human rights" as a belief - that was my interpretation.

I dont think you should have the right to strike. In the same way that I dont believe it is ok to steal from people.

For the sake of semantics the distinction in wording for me would be that I dont believe in the right to strike or agree with the right to strike...

That is what QF is saying on Twitter as well-
Qantas will re-instate all cancelled and delayed flights for tomorrow after the union pulled its planned strike action

,I wonder which side blinked first?.
Cheers

Just an update, notice you're onto it.

The engineers' union has cancelled protected industrial action planned for 0800-0900 on Friday morning, 13 May. As a result, Qantas has reinstated all flights that were cancelled and customers can travel with confidence.
