Engineer Strike

I dont think you should have the right to strike. In the same way that I dont believe it is ok to steal from people.

For the sake of semantics the distinction in wording for me would be that I dont believe in the right to strike or agree with the right to strike...

Striking=stealing from people? Give me a break, that might wash in the usa but not in more advanced societies such as ours.

If an employer is screwing an employee, that employee has remedies available. Striking is a last ditch. People in this country have the right to strike, and that's not semantics. The fact that you continue not to believe in the right to strike <... redacted ...>.

I am likely to be personally affected by this industrial action, so I'm not thrilled by it. But I stand by their right to take action if that's what they deem necessary. We've moved a long way on from the regular beer-and-public-transport strikes that used to occur at Christmas each year in the 1960s.

seems the strike has been called of, because ... wait for it ... "the Qantas fleet is suffering numerous technical difficulties". i.e. they've got too much work to go on strike. Maybe they also realise just how pissed off people would be if their flight were cancelled.

Excellent outcome. Just hope the pilots come to a similar conclusion when their turn comes.

Thing is that people would end up being pissed at Qantas, not the sector of workers who were downing tools, if their flights were cancelled.

Next month I am flying to Europe. The flight was booked with Qantas but I note that most of the flights over & back are operated by British Airways.
With possible strike action happening does anyone know if BA flights that are code share with Qantas will be impacted upon as if they were Qantas flights?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You are more likely to be affected by BA Industrial action:

(Although that's seeming less probable by the day.)

dammit... going to Brissy monday morning... i'm going to get affected me thinks...

We all see things that we don't believe should happen, but in reality they're going to happen anyway, whether we like it or not.

Not nice for anyone, but hopefully if the pilots do strike they could keep it to domestic flights... i mean to most places domestically there are several flights a day which may mean flying on a later flight that day or maybe the next day etc... A royal PITA i know, but if my flight to Buenos Aries on Sat 21 May is disrupted there isn't another scheduled flight for 3 days or so on Qantas i think, unless they make a special one... And also the possible knock on effects of people missing their next international connections...

How would you be planning a RTW trip for several months and the day or two your meant to fly out is right near when the pilots and the engineers decide to throw the toys out of the pram!!!

If an employer is screwing an employee,

I think we can all agree that striking is stealing in the same way that an employer screwing an employee is stealing

Just an update, notice you're onto it.

The engineers' union has cancelled protected industrial action planned for 0800-0900 on Friday morning, 13 May. As a result, Qantas has reinstated all flights that were cancelled and customers can travel with confidence.

Perhaps the engineers will strike with the pilots :?:

A mate at QF advises me just now all actions planned for next week (and the next 4 weeks) has also been cancelled

i live and work in the inner west of sydney and under the east/west runway and there is definetly QF planes going over this morning

The long haul EBA is the one being discussed, and that covers the 767, A330, 747 and A380.

Whilst I've reading lots of anti union comments here, the problem is that the management are lying. Stalling is all that has been happening in the various negotiations. It's quite obvious that all they really want is for ALL of the pilots to simply be gone. I've been in this company for almost 30 years, and I have never seen management treat staff with such hostility and disregard.

The QF pilots have never been on stike as far as I know. Certainly not in the past 30 plus years anyway. For us to even consider such action shows a level of desperation that is difficult to believe.
