Re: "Enhancements" to Membership Rewards scheme for Platinum Card / Platinum Reserve

For 3 points it needs to be on this list: Merchant Geo
I have never eaten (and have no plans to) at any of these restaurants! I might awaken my fee free Diners card from its long slumber as it still earns 1.5 pts per $......need to find out again who accepts Diners these days....

Re: "Enhancements" to Membership Rewards scheme for Platinum Card / Platinum Reserve

Sat in the restaurant - shared a bottle of red - and had a terribly overcooked tough scotch fillet each.

Bill total - $135.70 - no tip - waitress just plonked bottle of red on table with glasses and left us to poor - steak tough - so no tip.

Ate there a few months ago with the lady, same experience. Doubt I'll very much go back there again.

Would have been a nice night down there last night! I miss the area, the lady used to live in Mentone.. and was always good to visit.. silly girl moved to the stick to be with me. :D

Good luck with that plan. Stopped using my fee free diners along time ago .. Added merchant fees, lack of sites to use it, etc etc

Don't disagree with you on that, drross but Diners is accepted by (most) petrol stations, Woolworths. Coles, major hotels, most airlines and IMPORTANTLY for you and me, medical indemnity insurance companies. Apart from mine being fee free and earning 1.5 pts per $ spent (better than AMEX amex cards now!!), it gets me (and my 4 supplementary card holders) into some airport lounges overseas for free, and importantly Diners pts transfer to SPG at 2:1 and is the only card in Australia (I'm aware of) that can transfer to Hyatt (2:1)...I was a few thousand Hyatt pts short of an award nite at the newly renovated Park Hyatt in Sydney ($900+ per night!), so I paid my indemnity insurance with my Diners and TF points to my Hyatt account to book the award stay. So whilst there are many issues with Diners, it shouldn't be thrown into the bin yet....;)

It doesn't look like Virgin Australia is on the list of travel merchants where we get 1.5 points. Had a look at my points online and a DJ ticket was only getting 1:1.

I'd call them and check this... My understanding was that it is based on what code the merchant facility has...

If they confirm that airlines only earn 1:1 then I would be making a complaint that a) all of their marketing is completely misleading and b) that their product is now EVEN WORSE than it is with the rest of the changes...

I would be chasing that up as Amex clearly states:

"Earn 2 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent at airlines, accommodation, major cruise and tour operators paid directly or through travel agencies,"

DJ is an Airline....

The list https://www.americanexpress.com/australia/pdfs/terms-and-conditions-travel-merchants.pdf

Doesn't state Virgin, but does state Qantas... I have just booked some Qantas flights, so I assume I'll get 2 points per $1 for that

Doesn't seem to be?

02/10/2012 KFC MACQUARIE CENTRE,NORTH RYDE, NSW $10.95 30 0 30
02/10/2012 MCDONALDS CASTLE HILL $5.85 15 0 15

No, I don't normally eat that much fast food, just having a very bad weekend.

Also for the record, CityRail is classified as 'government', not 'travel'.

04/10/2012 PARRAMATTA BOM TERMINAL 1 $16.80 8 0 8

FWIW, nor is Qantas (as an airline) listed. As an agent, "Qantas Holidays" is listed - they are effectively a separate entity to Qantas.

The heading of the table is "Earn 2 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent at airlines, accommodation, major cruise and tour operators paid directly or through travel agencies, including the following travel agencies" ...

For me it is obvious that Virgin Australia and Qantas are airlines and would earn at 2 points per dollar for being thus.

"Qantas Holidays" is a travel agency, not an airline, but since it is listed, earnings are a 2 points per dollar as well.

If there was an agency called "Virgin Australia Holidays" then purchases though it with these cards would earn at one point per dollar since it is not listed.

I think there is a real AMEX disconnect here.

See here: https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/platinum-reserve-credit-card/

As a member of Rewards Ascent you'll earn points at a rate of 1.5 Membership Rewards points per dollar spend on your card until 01 October 2012. After which you will earn:

  • 3 points[SUP]2[/SUP] per $1 spent at restaurants in Australia listed here
  • 2 points[SUP]2[/SUP] per $1 spent on:
    • Airlines, accommodation, major cruises and tour operators paid directly or through
      travel agents listed here
    • Spend in foreign currency when overseas and online
Under both links are is that "Merchant Geo" page wich simply links to a list of restaurants that take Amex.

Unless purchases with the Platinum Amex at each and every one of the places listed on that link (here) earns three points per dollar then Amex could be considered to be fraudulent with this.

They were all done using Platinum Reserve, which does say "3 points2 per $1 spent at restaurants in Australia listed here".

At least we know that general common sense do apply for most classifications. It would be stupid to have to look up this table every time.

The double points did not post for QF on my last booking. (1st Oct.) I chased up and the correct points wil be added.

Didn't post for LAN either.

I am going to conduct a very careful audit of my MR points each month on my Plat Amex cards, and complain bitterly if they are not allocated correctly. They changed the rules and now they can bear the brunt of my calls/emails. I think they way they have structured this change is going to cost them money in the long run, its also very confusing for cardmembers.

So Amex enhance the points, and can't even get points posting correctly from Qantas and Virgin, the two major travel companies

Not surprised!

Lets see if my maccas 3X points per $ post correctly this week :)

My points for eating have posted correctly...

Note however that points now just show under the 'basic earn' type column with a zero in bonus points...

So your $10 purchase will show 30 points straight up, rather than the old split they used to have
