I live around the corner from The Railway. There is a bottleshop underneath attached to it and I guess on Saturday nights it does turn into an upscale kinda club/pub. But the food there isn't Maccas.
Walks like a duck.........Quacks like a duck.........Oh shoot no - don't be a clown Cent cardholder who gave us 4.3K of your hard earned readies - it's a rabbit!

Don't believe us? Go look here - we have them on the net for you. Don't you understand Cent cardholder from Oct 2012 you may no longer make a spontaneous decision as to where you will eat - you WILL consult with AMEX first.

Haha!

At least if you do consult Amex's merchant guide it is likely to be correct... unlike the HORRIFICALLY BAD version that Diner's sports...

They have many many many places that no longer/refuse to accept their card at all, or even better they have merchants that are clearly closed down still listed!!

Just checked my statement - 3 days at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Singapore, booked through the hotel's call centre, classified as "miscellaneous".
How does this happen? Are Amex employing clowns? I'm still overseas at the moment but will query them on my return.

This shouldn't matter... Amex seems to have designed their program to account for this, as international spend earns at the same rate as domestic travel...

They do seem to be coming unstuck however since we Aussies like to use international travel providers who use funny merchant categories and have their facilities offshore (even for AUD transactions) in many instances.

I complained when Agoda wasn't recognised and they credited me the points anyway...

You should have stayed at the Conrad next door, they give you 5 points/dollar :)

What I don't like is that if you made a reservation before October and cancel it now, the refund deducts 2 points/dollar while you earned less than 2 points/dollar for the original reservation.

I just did a calculation of points earned per dollar over the last 90 days. This period pretty much covers the new point structure.
For me the base points per dollar ratio is about 1.75, which means I benefit from the new point structure. The old point structure would be 1.5, so I get about 17% more points than before!

Good for you :)

So I'm guessing you eat a lot, fly a lot and stay in lots of hotels but don't pay much tax!

Sounds like the good life :)

The Centurion life! :D

I also calculated that if I had put all my spend on my Citibank signature card, I would have earned about 1.9 Krisflyer miles per dollar. So in terms of jetsetting in SQ suites, Citibank is the better card...

Hmm, on which card? Cent or Plat? Conrad were on the Plat 3.5pts per $1 list last quarter, but I've never seen mention of 5pts per $1.

I also calculated that if I had put all my spend on my Citibank signature card, I would have earned over 2.1 Krisflyer miles per dollar. So in terms of jetsetting in SQ suites, Citibank is the better card...

Better add "put a lot of foreign currency charges on your card" to that list as well :-)

Aint my Centurion life - my spend has gone from 30K+/mth to about 2K - cept when I use Cent by mistake - jerks.

Lol me too

I did laugh when the RM tried to convince me I would be better off.

How much do I have to eat to compensate for about $30K a month of tax I said!!

Oh I see your point he said. Muppet!!

Maybe it is 5pts/$ when you add the 2pts/$ for overseas spent. I stayed at a Conrad last quarter and ended up getting 2 base points and 3 bonus points per dollar.

Ahh OK, maybe that's it. Thanks.

My RM on leave - his replacement I spoke to trotted out the line ......."Well there is a lot more to Cent than the MR pts..................like Travel and Concierge".

Jeez - who uses their travel centre now? About as much value as titts on a bull. I used them once last year - to book me a room in Barcelona - and then when it came time to pay I used Select - 3.33pts/$1 is better than any Amex earn rate.

Seriously becoming a comedy show.

How do you get 1.9 KF Miles? I also have Citi Select and the earn is 2 points per dollar then coverted to KF miles at 1.5 to 1 giving a real conversion of 1.33 KF miles per dollar. Is this because of your overseas spend?

Cheers,

Mitch :)

Yes, overseas spend. I didn't take into account all the bonus partners of the citi card: Citibank Australia - Bonus Partners
For example Intercontinental or Marriott hotels, which give you 3 miles per dollar.

I have a corporate affiliated AMEX gold credit card ($0 annual fee, 1 point per dollar for everything) and I am still receiving 1 point per dollar for all my telecommunications (mobile / broadband bills), utility (power bills) and insurance (AAMI car insurance). With the MR earnings having been cut to 0.5 points per dollar for these categories is it because I have a corporate affiliated card or is it the specific gold card that is meaning I'm still earning 1 point per $?

I believed Telstra and AAMI were bonus partners. However, if it is an industry card, they could have different earn rates.
