Is it just back luck that the entertainment systems are U/S on most QF international trips I make?

Normally they can be re-set so ask your flight attendant.
Coming back from SYD on Monday night we had no reading lights and our entertainment system was stuck on Channel 1 with no sound for our 4A and 4B seats.
Our FA got it re-set so the system was working on the 767 about 10minutes after we asked.

A few years ago I would have said no - the Rockwell Collins system was pretty cough in particular on the 747. The A330 seemed to cope better with it but had a few problems too.

But if your talking recently then I would say bad luck. They are on patch 8 I think and it is very very reliable with a big decrease in reported incidents.

If your on a newer A330/737 or an A380 the Panasonic system is highly reliable. I haven't seen a full system failure or heard of one that wasn't able to be fixed onboard after a few resets. Of course there have been incidents with individual seats not working until the aircraft has landed and serviced by an engineer.

The issues I have had recentl relate to the on demand part not working - but has been on the loop system.

Had a number of issues on an A380 LHR-SIN-MEL a few weeks ago - various seats would lose all media while others kept working fine. Required about half a dozen resets, the last of which was even more of a full system reset (ie all cabin lights came on to full brightness, etc) before it appeared to work more reliably.

The last few flight's I've had - SYD-SIN-FRA- return, QF have had to reset the IFE each time.
747's showing their age?

Most probably. That's why I have an I-pod touch with movies and music, so if it's not working I'm still entertained.

How many trips do you take? Certainly there are a few issues. Did a bit of a countback and in the past 12 months about 5% of international flights had issues for me (all 747). But that's only 2 out of ~40 segments.

On our QF31 on 23/02 the entertainment system had to be rebooted a few times we were told that we would have a short delay in SIN to repair it that short delay turned into a 5 and a half hour wait Was there any mention of this delay in Aus as it seemed a long time to fix the system as the delay caused us and many others to miss there connecting flights On another note anyone who has doubts about the value of QC membership i can assure them that 5hrs in the Flounge in Sing beats 5hrs outside

Your delay my have been the one discussed here

Re: Airline Compensation ...what is appropriate???
"Perhaps I was unlucky but last year I suffered IFE Failure (multiple reboots) on SYD-LAX and same problem (but worse) on the A380 from LHR to SYD. I filed complaint to QF via email and also offered postive feedback on staff service on both flights (very good for long-haul economy). I received a reply: sorry. Compensation - nil.
Neeedless to say I was disappointed but I'm now only bronze QFF, after many years at higher levels. However I was grateful that engines 1 and 2 were fully operational (Yes it was that A380!)"
This was my post from flights in August and October last year. It sounds like they didn't fix the IFE problems whilst the engines were being repaired:D

More accurately, redcow - flying F OR being a Premium FF is what is worth it! After all, to enter the F lounge you have to be either flying F or be a WP FF!

But generally speaking, your posting is an excelent example of why it pays to fly in premium and/or have higher status. My partner was awaiting a QF30 flight which experien ced a LONG delay leaving Sydney - as a J/Gold passenger he simply enjoyed the J lounge for longer than expected. And yes, it was better than trying to cope in a gate area with, say, 100 seats, when there are 400 people trying to be comfortable!
:)

Well, thank you everyone for your replies. Clearly I'm from another planet.
Whilst many of you might shop around for the best deals at the front end of the aircraft, I do likewise at the rear - I pay for my travel, myself (without tax rebate - silly me).
I have difficulty justifying flying QF (after many years), when treated like s..t in Y class & the entertainment systems never work (am I the only one who has an issue with a tray on my lap for 3 hours?). Emirates is now my preferred carrier, sadly.
Touche?
JM

I'm flying QF to the UK in just over a week and I'm in whY. I won't even switch the IFE on. I take my IPad loaded with stuff I want to watch. I have an IPod classic with 26,000 songs on it, and I also have my IPhone loaded with podcasts.

It is not much fun at the wrong end of the plane so I don't take chances with the IFE.

JetLagged I was going to post this on the upgrade thread but here will do My wife and I have had 2 upgrades in 3 years first one upgraded from Y to PE bulkhead when we were NB this one on QF31 from PE to J 12EF we are now NBQC so I think upgrading is a lucky dip TonyHancock thanks for that thread yes we were on QF31 that was delayed for 5 hrs
