Come on mate, I can understand that people have legitimate anxiety issues and being stuck in a crowd is one of them and I know that uncomfortable feeling, but are you really telling me that being in row 4 and surrounded by P1s actually makes a difference between being in Row 9 and (shock horror) perphaps some non-status pax!!
To many people where they sit does not make a difference. To me that perception makes a huge difference and it has nothing to do with with the people surrounding me.

And it is not an easy thing to explain either as it out of my control.

of course there is one way of guaranteeing the seat you want - fly Jetstar or Tiger. Then you can choose your preferred seat for a surcharge and can have row 1 every time if you want.

I don't recall Johnk having too much a fondness for JQ, if my memory serves me correctly

That is assuming your flight will actually fly and not get "rescheduled" for in 5 days time  :D

Not if someone else has already chosen it, same as QF/DJ.

True, but I would be shocked if you couldn't get in the first couple of rows on any Jetstar / Tiger flight (assuming you are willing to pay). Most people don't pay for seat selection, or at least not the preimium seat selection.
