The important bit of the VX boarding pass. No mention of VA/VFF status anywhere on the ticket - card was handed over at check-in desk.

One thing I've noticed with priority baggage with both DL & VX is how they do the priority tags. They are connected with the luggage tag so it is a one time use.

Compare that to the VA priority tag which as SG or WP, I could leave on there until someone removes it.

Day 10, San Francisco
Friday 10 January

Lots of afternoon cable carring was enjoyed. I saw one of the worst intersections in San Francisco, Powell & California. It was a 4 way stop intersection - those intersections are stupid! Not only do hardly anyone know what to do (vehicles & pedestrians) but it is also a cable car intersection. How there isn't there 50 accidents a day there, I don't know.

I made it down to Fishermans Wharf & decided to go on an Aqua Duck tour. I'd been on similiar tours before but this one was different. The driver/captain (Captain Van) was very funny & very punny with lots of different stories, jokes & music related to the tour. The tour is so good I'm going to do it again in a couple of days time. It wasn't helped (or was it?) by giving us all duck horns to blow at various points. I was (mostly) in tune with the music. Many people gave us all strange looks but I didn't care. It was great to have some fun.

More cable carring & an earlyish night as I try to decompress a little from a hectic 10 days.

If you go to San Francisco, you must do this Aqua Duck tour that leaves outside Applebees.

I've seen a few of these things on cars around here.

Day 11, San Francisco & San Jose
Saturday 11 January

I was going to leave the Cable Cars & Fishermans Wharf to the weekend tourists. A gloomy day but with even light for photography compared to the many shadows that sun in San Francisco causes.

Last year in New Orleans, the streetcar service that ran past my hotel in the Garden District had just resumed so I decided to make the first day Streetcar Saturday. So today was going to be Streetcar Saturday.

But Muni had different ideas. I made it to Market St & soon found buses replacing the F Line vintage streetcars. There was no info at the stop & several tourists let a couple of replacement buses go by expecting a streetcar. I checked the Muni website & saw that sewerage works along Market St saw buses replacing streetcars.

Instead, I went via the N (or as the auto announcements say "N ... N) line to the Caltrain station. Soon after arriving, I saw that an express train (they call it a Bullet Train) was about to depart for San Jose. I hurriedly purchased a ticket (bought the wrong one - 2 extra zones!) & boarded the train. This was not before seeing a SFFD Fire Engine - the crew were inside the nearby Safeway doing some mid-shift shopping. Their shifts can be a lot longer than their Australian equalivants - I have heard shifts of 24 - 48 hours long so buying food is important. And they need to be ready to go at a moment's notice.

I also spotted the Aqua Duck from yesterday & the same guy was telling the same joke he did with me yesterday. He recognised me & we had a shouted conversation as he was waiting for a traffic light. Good laughs.

I got a nice grab shot of a plane climbing out of SFO from the train & was able to upload it & a cropped version (cropped in camera) to the interweb. I could not tell what airline the plane was from or the type.

About an hour later, I arrived at San Jose. Wandering around, I found that there is a cafe named after me (wishful thinking!) & a streetcar line. Lots of signs saying to look out for a trolley. I found a trolley .... ok, Ammericans ... a shopping cart ... in front of a trolley sign. I took some photos & a lady must have thought I was either law enforcement or working for the city because she asked me if I knew what happened to the homeless guy who just got taken to hospital by paramedics. She also asked me if I knew what was happening to his stuff, the stuff I was photographing. I had no answers. I did explain an Australian trollry, though.

I walked a lot & found a place to eat. I decided to get a bus back to the station & get a train back to San Francisco. The bus did not drop me directly at the station but I decided to stay on the bus until the end of the route. I asked the driver how long before he went back downtown - he had enough time to go to the loo & that was about it. I told him that I'd mind the bus for him. When he returned, we compared notes about bus driving in San Jose & my trains. I think he (jokingly) hates me after I told him that I get 5 weeks leave a year & long service leave. But it was good to have a chat. As a new bus driver, I assured him that while some things are different, many of the things we experience is the same. But I know thst my conditions are way better.

Leaving the bus behind, I walked to the station & didn't have long to wait for the return train. Buying the right ticket this time, the train was all stations to San Francisco. A pleasant enough trip back & then a Muni train & a cable car back to the hotel.

My loco, 911, for the San Jose - San Francisco leg. The red & blue lights were in the perfect spot for a different type of tribute to 9/11 by me. The lights are really there as indicator lights for a platform based APU. I'm sure loco number 911 pre-dates 9/11.

Here's the trolley photo I mentioned earlier. It turns out that a local street sweeper bagged up the homeless guy's things in the garbage bags. I so did not associate this photo with what happened - it would be very strange to see this without someone present.

What made things worse was that later, I saw a police car & an undertaker's van at a local funeral home & wondered if the guy didn't make it.

If you've traveled in the LOTFATP, you'll know that there's a lot of homeless people & pan handlers.

Today I saw a guy with a cardboard sign begging for money so he can continue his travel. I sincerely hope he was merely going for a new angle on the cardboard sign.

Reminds me of a guy a few years ago in Pioneer Square, Portland OR. He was begging for money to fly to England. That was in 2009. He is probably still waiting in 2014. I'll look out for it on Wednesday afternoon.

Here's the orIginal of the plane that I took from the train. The black is the rubber around the window.

I've found an app for the iPad called Flickr Studio. Now I can upload images from the camera or phone online but with this app, batch editing is so much easier.

You'll now be able to view all my pics on Flickr (erkpod) & not need to follow me there.

Day 11, San Francisco
Sunday 11 January

After yesterday's failed Streetcar Saturday, Streetcar Sunday went well. Weather was nice when in direct sun (more than yesterday) but a little cold by the standards of the rest of my trip if in the shady areas created by the buildings.

Apart from the regular vintage streetcars, there was a streetcar that looks like an open top, convertible streetcar. Turns out that there's 2 of them here in San Francisco from the unlikely origin of Blackpool, England. One of them is in service along the wharf section but the other one is still under trial & testing after recently arriving from England.

I went to the Streetcar Museum, mainly to see if they had any new merch. Because the cars are running in regular service on the streets every day, the main features are small displays & merch. Some merch I did pick up were 2 destination rolls that were on the Muni light rail vehicles until they were replaced by electronic signs in 2009. I got one roll that would have been on the ends of the trains & the other on the side displays. They are sealed & rolled so I can send them home easily. Now to find some room at home - possibly when I remodel my studio.

I had fun riding the streetcars until close to sunset. I went to Appplebees for food & had a seat at the bar. On the screen in front of me was an (American) football game. The game had about 10 minutes to go before the end of the game between San Diego & Denver. That 10 minutes of game play (15 minutes per quarter) went for about 45 minutes. I knew that the game is stop-start but that was the first time I'd measured it on TV. Various people in town were happy because earlier in the day, the San Francisco 49ers defeated Carolina to move a step closer to the Superbowl in a couple of weeks.

The San Francisco Streetcar Museum (not to be confused with the Cable Car Museum & depot) has the front of a streetcar inside so you can pretend to be a streetcar driver. The bell works as does the destination blind.

Day 13, San Francisco
Monday 13 January

My plan to send some parcels home would have worked better if I took the parcels with me when I left the hotel. Oh well....

Second last day here. I could stay here for a very long time. I heart San Francisco but my next destination is where I have many friends, Portland OR.

Day 13, San Francisco
Monday 13 January

After forgetting to take the parcels with me to the post office, I found an outlet that ships for all the major companies. I also found the post office.

I decided to go on a Muni Metro light rail trip. No matter where I go around the world on public transport, I find that some things that never change. There was a couple who needed to get a room as well as the lady with a trolley overflowing with water bottles. Her load was taller than she was even when she stood up.

Seeing a KFC, I decided to eat. The shop was full of City workers. At this location, they ask for your name so you collect your food on the other side of the counter. When I heard the name Marco called out, I had to control myself so hard not to answer with Polo!

Back on the rails, I was heading downtown for a Bay tour & another Aqua Duck ride. However, I noticed that Engine 35 was standing out the front of the station. So I got off the train & headed over for some photos. The firies were probably inside the station doing something important so I didn't disturb then.

I headed back towards the wharves & eventually arrived at the Aqua Duck building. The next tour was in an hour so I went to McDonalds to recharge. Arriving back, I had Capt Jeff as my Aqua Duck captain. I had even better fun this time. The tour was slightly different & thankfully, Capt Jeff's style was a little different with his natural humour & less historical facts. I even got to drive the duck in the bay. Capt Jeff asked me if I knew Hugh Jackman. I said that if he wanted, Jeff could keep Hugh over here. Again, they probably shouldn't have given me a quacker. Picture runners running on the waterfront & they are passed by a massive 12 foot high Aqua Duck with the Rocky theme cranked up. If that isn't enough, imagine an Aqua Duck filled with people just like me playing the Rocky theme by blowing into their quackers.

The day ended up with another cable car ride thanks to the Muni passport. I'm traveling not touristing....
