Before the new years sale ended, Qantas listed the price BNE - MEL at $149 (post sale prices). Shortly after, the price was $159. Now, the price is $139.

What's going on here? Do they keep changing the fare or is this a glitch on the website?

Perhaps something to do with the new Q class red-e-deals on the east cost:

Red-e-Deal Fare Update for East Coast Markets

Effective for sale and travel immediately, Qantas has made the following changes to the fare tariffs on SYDMEL vv, SYDBNE vv and MELBNE vv:

  • A new fare basis code of QPTWEBU (booked in Q class) has been added to the Red eDeal fare family and will be governed by the standard fare conditions applying to domestic Red eDeal fares;
  • An equivalent QSXI and QPTKIX have also been added to facilitate inbound and outbound selling;
  • All existing OPTDAY fares have replaced by an EPTWEBU fare basis code which will be inventory controlled rather than controlled by flight time/date/advance purchase conditions; and
  • East Coast seasonal fares have been withdrawn from sale following the introduction of the new fare tariffs.
Near as I can tell $139 is the 'E'

AALovers are going to love that!!!!!

(Actually, my red-e-deal to HKG soon is booked in Q class. Looks like Qantas is using them more and more these days... )

Just looked on AA.com and I can't find what Q class is on the scheme. can anyone point me correct direction?

Bit more analysis....The cheapest fares appear to be 'E'. Not sure what level 'Q' is at.

It's a zero earn class when crediting to AA (similarly, Q class on AA doesn't credit to Qantas)

MEL to BNE base fares:
E: $116.73 (with
ppplus.bmp
= $139)
O: $134.91 (with
ppplus.bmp
= $159)
Q: $149.46 (with
ppplus.bmp
= $175)
N: $167.64 (with
ppplus.bmp
= $195)

Only O class earns on AA.

It seems that Qantas have now split their red e-deals into four tranches.

I take it that earning of these red e-deals is still discount whY?

I'm somewhat surprised Qantas haven't started a reduced point earn and/or reduced minimum points guarantee for red e-deals. Considering a cheap flight on BA (say LHR to GLA) gives you a couple hundred points.

Perhaps I shouldn't give them any ideas...

Well its not like 1000 points is worth much anyway... even if you flew SYD-MEL every week for a year, it would only be 100k.

8 Return Trips gives you a free return trip. I think that's a fair redemption rate.

Mostly loyalty programs are in the range of 5-10%, this is 12.5%.

Of course, this is only the short city flyer routes. Earning on longer, regional routes are not quite as good.

Indeed. The MPG minimum really favours SYD and MEL residents at the expense of PER and ADL residents.

If the MPG was reduced to say 500 points, the earning rate for sectors could increase from 0.7 to 0.9 in my estimation.

Hence my problem; apologies if this hijacks the thread. Working like a dog since successful Platinum challenge in March 07 on AA, and have just lost my 25k points with them for 18 months inactivity. Thought that my BNE-MKY flight in November would credit to AA, but its a Q class, so no points ...

Very helpful AA 1800 673 486 no. advised that I could do a 12 month 'Reengagement challenge - Level 1' where I need to

receive email summaries for points balance

AND one of

credit 5000 points from 3 or more partners

OR

fly an AA or OW return for at least 750 flyer miles

Qantas BNE-MEL-BNE would work, but how does one tell what fare class is booked prior to paying? I seem to recall being able to do that about a year ago. Qantas 131313 reckons you can't tell online, and they could tell you for 27.50 booking fee. Am I then restricted to travel agents?!:(

After selecting your flights - but before entering passenger details or paying view the page source and search for "classe" After "playing" with the site for a while you will get a feel for which fares on which routes will give you the desired fare class. OTOH one step up from red-e-deals will almost always credit to AA.

Enjoy

To further detail what is being referred to by wandering_fred ...

Qantas have updated their domestic web booking engine and one can now ascertain the exact booking class fare bucket for a domestic flight before purchasing.

You can do it on the website by:

  • Doing a flight/fare search for your dates/destination and bringing up the list of available flights/prices,
  • looking for the flight/price you wish
  • Viewing the page source
  • Repeating the following until you find your fare bucket code:
    • search for "addClasse" (it's easiest to simply "Page Down")
    • you will see something like:
      "theRecommandation.addClasse('O');"
    • Two lines above that would be a line similar to the following:
      "var theRecommandation = new Recommandation(0, 103.69);"
    • if the price when rounded up matches the price you are looking for (e.g.156.99 -> 157), then your fare class is that contained in the addClasse search, e.g. ('O')
      e.g.
      Code:
      var theRecommandation = new Recommandation(1, 109.0);

      theRecommandation.addClasse('O');
    • if the price does not match repeat until you find it.
  • Note that for multi segment options there will be an addclasse line for each segment, e.g. The following is a $1420 2 segment Business class fare in D and J:
    Code:
    var theRecommandation = new Recommandation(42, 1419.7);

    theRecommandation.addClasse('D');

    theRecommandation.addClasse('J');

Thanks Serfty, I just had a look at some flights between MEL-ADL in early march, I noticed using your method (IE was all i could get it to work on, not firefox) then sometimes the text would read multiple classes for the same fare price ie
var theRecommandation = new Recommandation(43, 1321.69);

theRecommandation.addClasse('D');

theRecommandation.addClasse('J');

in this case do you get J or D? I won't be flying J for this leg anyway but I this occurred for many of the economy classes as well, and in one case it was O & N which would worry me as I wouldn't know whether I got miles or not
Also why are K class often cheaper than M class?

however I am noticing that I can get S & O class fares cheaper than N and Q more often than not.

This was a multi segment option on for the outbound (ADL-SYD via MEL IIRC) - First leg D, second leg J in that particular case.

It surprises me that saver fare may be cheaper then red e-deal (unless your referring to the total cost of multi segment options).

I am booking it as a return flight and it appears logical to that it lists flights out first then breaks and lists flights in. the text I posted was the most expensive price for the return flight segment only.. That why I asked. the outbound has similar things accross the board. Even if I look at 1 way it is the same.
I just think I will have to be careful when booking one that has these "dual" codes attached

l'm trying a dummy booking and don't know which page is the 'viewing the pages source page' is. Can someone help me please?

So, l did a dummy Syd-ADL flight in march. Picked the flight, nexy page is step 3, the Review page. Have l gone to far?
