eSims, what is your experience.

Woolies Mobile has VoWifi, so maybe the calls came through over wifi when she connected to the hotel internet?
AFAIK at the time Woolies Mobile did not have VoWifi/VoLTE in June.

She certainly wasn't able to call over wifi, we tried that. And there was no "Woolworths over Wifi" designated on the phone (iPhone 12) at the time or any time after when in the UK.

Doesn't mean it wasn;t implemented, it may have just be spotty depending on the ISP.

June this year? If so, they definitely did. Most users in the Whirlpool thread (myself included) had it switched on around November last year, although it was in stages.

Not sure why it was unreliable then. It worked for one call and then didnt work for the rest of the trip. My phone is on Telstra and I was able to use VoWifi and I was able to use it all the time, even voLTE with my 3Mobile SIM.

I believe (and backed up by my own experience late last year) that VoWhatever doesn't work when the sim you are using to provide the data connection is roaming, as opposed to being on it's native network. So would probably make sense if your 3Mob worked if it was from the UK, and Airalo didn't because it is basically always roaming.

But we were on wifi for most of the time (British Telecom)

For some Aussie issued SIMs it does, Telstra for example and they say as much on their website.

UK issued SIMs don't, the last time I checked anyway which admittedly was years ago.

I‘m recently back from Jordan. I couldn’t find any Aussie carrier that had roaming packs for Jordan - I was with Optus. Even the Telstra website was very confusing and I wasn’t sure that a telstra sim would work.

I ended up porting my sim to Boost (uses full Telstra network) even though the website said the sim would not work at all. I then got a Airlo data sim for the Middle East. I received all txt messages and sms verification codes for banking etc and with Wi-Fi calling on, could easily make and receive normal phone calls without any extra costs or enabling roaming.

The same works with Telstra

Airalo has worked like a charm in Thailand. I had better reception out at sea than I have at home with Telstra 😒

Downloaded, ready to start next Monday when I fly away. TBH I thought I had activated it (but I have it turned off on the iPhone controls).

Unfortunately they don't cover my main destination - Moldova - but Airalo do, so I'll have the excitement of changing eSIMS back and forth. Not looking forward to that.
Check carefully (especially Airalo) about uninstalling and reinstalling eSIMs. From memory, Airalo says you lose your plan if uninstalled/reinstalled. Flexiroam seems to let you juggle eSIMs.

Phones can generally have multiple eSims installed but only TWO sims in total active at any one time. So no need to uninstall, just turn off one eSim (Airalo for example), turn on eg Flexiroam. Check SIM settings for calls, messages and mobile data match your requirements.

You can install eight or more eSIMs on an iPhone and use two phone numbers at the same time. 24/02/2023

Yes Airalo is a once off installation, once removed it's gone.

I think @Lat34 answers my question, but I'm not going to uninstall any eSim; I have both apps installed and intend to turn them on and off within iPhone Settings depending where I am. Will see what happens! I see both listed under 'SIMS' in 'Mobile'

Yes, the comment was specifically about “uninstalling” an eSIM. Airalo (as mentioned above) will kill any active plan if the eSIM is uninstalled.

Not all eSIMs come with a number, some are data only. Useful to know for places like Cambodia where you need a local number if you want to use PassApp for example. SIMs are cheap and quick to sort on arrival at PNH anyway, I think mine was up and running about 90 seconds after arriving at the counter! Now they have that down to a fine art.....

Im a big esim convert (data only) have used Bytesim for last 4 trips - no issues.

Just remember to print the QR code if you plan to scan on arrival.......had some fun in japan trying to print in a convenience store

Most are in app purchase and install. Just need wifi!
