eSims, what is your experience.

I remember noticing i had 5G on the Airalo European region sim while Belgium. Each country had different partners and some had 5G, others just LTE.

Scotland had no 5G but i was well away from cities.
That’s interesting. Just before posting, I scrolled through the Airalo country list on their Global Plan and it looked like LTE was the highest. I need to go back and look more closely.

I’m not sure if the others are quite as transparent.

Perhaps it varies according to plan. I was looking at the European region 30 day, 3GB sim, then went into additional info and chose a country to see who their partners were to get that screenshot.

Yep, the Global Plan info provides available networks and speeds. But only shows LTE for Belgium.

I had the same plan and it was 5G in Spain.

For the 28Deg Flexiroam 3Gb plan, does anyone have experience WRT the timing of redeeming/activating an eSim? When I click through and get to “redeeming” the 3Gb plan, it also says it will activate it. Presumably that will redeem and activate all in one hit at the same time, whereas on their FAQs it says you can activate any time after redemption. I want to redeem then activate at a later date to maximise the 15 days but uncertain if it will do both in one hit and ruin my timing.

When I got my one in December it activated straight away and I had to get support to adjust the date for me. I made sure not to get my wife's one until we were ready to need to use it.

That’s what I was afraid of. Thanks for confirming asterisk.

Since it’s linked to our email address only, I assume we can perform the instant redemption and activation while overseas (without roaming access to local mobile service)?

I activated mine before leaving as I wanted access as soon as I landed and I wasn't sure if I'd have Internet access when I landed.

Do you have a Flexiroam eSIM already installed or are you waiting to do it at the same time - ie download, install sim and then activate the 28° offer.

If you can, have the eSIM installed (no active plans) and then it ought to be straight forward to activate the freebie plan when you need it.

PS
For their regular paid plans you nominate the start date.

@SYD - This is for the 28degrees 15days/3Gb promo. When choosing eSim, the redeem and activate features are performed at the same time (instead of allowing you to do the activation at a later date).

I had a seperate token(?) or link to get the eSIM months ago. You used to have to pay for the esim then load up a plan. But they had a promo for a free esim so I jumped on that. Sat in my email in box for a year or two…

Anyway, that esim is installed and works like a prepaid sim with no credit…well for the moment.

I see now that they give you a “free” esim when you order a plan. Hopefully that’s reusable… This message in the app:

Great advice team.
What do you advise best SIM for one month UK only - will use for local Uk and calls to Oz/lots of map navigation
I have options of
- TLS global roam $10/d ie do nothing
- I have iphone 14promax so will be e sim compatible/esim?
- Have multiple i phone 6plus we use for internet/back ups and for travelling friends here who want a local number. Buy a sim in UK?

Most of the generic eSIM providers mentioned earlier tend to focus on data. If you want calls also check out the UK service providers on the Apple website under eSIms. There might be a decent prepaid esim that would could be best and possibly cheaper.

GiffGaff is my go to UK but they’re still only physical SIMs (purchase at convenience store and load some credit plus a “goody bag” for calls, txt and data). Should also roam in Europe for free.

Gift gaff is great, we ordered a physical SIM and it was delivered to our Sydney address. I think we paid £10 for 10GB.

I still have one I bought in London around 2018. I think it was £1 or £2. Yes, for about £10 the “Goodybag” is probably the best value out there for the UK. Plus it should roam in Europe!
Despite the system trying to cancel mine from lack of use, sticking it in a phone and turning it on here in Oz is enough to extend its life for another 12 mths. Even without credit!

Convert your local sim to an eSim then buy a physical sim in the UK. Last September AFAIR we got two Vodafone sims for £10 each, both with 40G of data and unlimited calls for one month. Then set new sim for default primary fir all outgoing calls and data and old local sim as secondary. Can receive incoming on both.

That is a very good idea but wont the old local (when receiving incoming) still be data roaming with EG telstra $10/d
Apologies if I have misinterpreted

No. Turn off roaming. You’ll still get calls and sms on secondary (au sim) but primary will be used for data. The Australian $10/d from our Telecos must be one of the greatest ripoffs on the planet.
