Just booked a J award via AA on Etihad MUC AUH BNE for October next year. 75K. I had a brief look for F seats into MEL but nothing showed up via the Guest website. Took a couple of hours playing around on the BAEC site looking for Cathay and Qatar seats, connecting through HKG or DOH back to Australia from Germany (would have been only 60k) but couldn't find anything decent, so in the end I coughed up the extra 15k. Looking forward to trying out EY's 787, and very happy to fly AUH BNE direct, without the awful SIN stop they used to have on this leg.

Let's not forget about routing through DOH on QR as the other exception to the rule!

It's not negativity

Just trying to be realistic about availability as the more days that pass (and the more people know about it) the less availability becomes (and AUH-SYD vv is a great example availability becoming close to nought

We did find one date out of a week that we could have flown AUH-xMEL-SYD but didn't want to really slum it on QF J domestic after a very nice long haul F, so we have are sucking it up this time to fly QF F at least when we land in SYD we go straight home rather than waiting for a domestic J flight

And there there an example like below where availability is much more limited;

Just tried booking at CMB-xAUH-SYD in J and they wanted 75,000 points grrrrrrr whilst I was hoping for 35K

Your proposed routing is not permitted hence two awards. Routing from Asia 2 to South Pacific only allows a connection in Asia 2.

From MLE it would be 45K.
