Reference: Two return flights Hobart to Dublin - Booked directly through Etihad - for wife & mother in law (i flew on my Velocity points)

We sought reimbursements of costs incurred for overnight accommodation in Melbourne, on our return trip - due to circumstances beyond our control.

Two airline tickets were purchased directly through Etihad with the returning flight arriving in Melbourne at approximately 6:00pm- with the ongoing flight to Hobart three hours later at 9:00pm (the last flight for that day with partner Virgin Australia).

I also made this journey (by using Velocity Frequent Flyer points from Melbourne to Dublin return and paying cash on the Melbourne to Hobart leg)

I received confirmation from Virgin Australia that the flight leaving Melbourne to Hobart on 11 June at 9:00pm was cancelled and offered the early flight of 7:30 pm. Virgin Australia were not aware that I would be flying into Australia from Abu Dhabi in order to catch this flight fromMelbourne to Hobart.

My wife never received this confirmation, we emailed Etihad about this - and to date has never received a response to this.

From here, until I resolved the issue with Etihad , their file records confirmed there were numerous phone calls from me and these totalled many hours.

The outcome was that Etihad acknowledged there could be insufficient time between arriving at Melbourne Airport, collecting our bags, clearing customs, having our bags checked in to the domestic section of the journey and boarding the plane, so Etihad changed the return flight from Melbourne to Hobart until the next day.

We also have proof that the Monday flight from Melbourne to Hobart was in fact cheaper than the originally booked flight, so Etihad would have made a saving in this instance.

Overall the service we received on the flights was good, however, you must admit that Etihad let us down badly in not advising us of the Melbourne to Hobart flight cancellation and until I made repeated phone calls, Etihad had made no provision for this, therefore, without me being on this flight and already being advised of the changes, my 80 year old mother in law and wife could have been expecting to fly from Melbourne to Hobart at 9:00 pm without notification of the cancellation of this flight, therefore, leaving them with no flight home from Melbourne and no accommodation at that time of night.

Accommodation for two separate rooms totalled $279.00 with dinner and breakfast totalling $148.41 being a total of $427.41 - and this is the amount being claimed against - email sent on June 16 2012 - no response. (in fact, Etihad staff, when hearing of this, gave me the specific email Etihad address to complain to)

In the email to Ethiad - we advised that " We look forward to a quick and positive response from you, however, if this is not the case, be advised that we will take the matter further. " - no response, so someone please tell me what should we do now?

Did you book the MEL-HBA sector of your flight on two different tickets?

You do suggest that this is the case, as you mentioned that DJ/VA were not aware of your flights from Abu Dhabi.

If you did do this, sorry but why should Etihad compensate you for anything. The other thing fact is Virgin cancelled the original flight, so your beef should be with them.

You might try to recoup your loss through your travel insurance, but it was Virgin that cancelled the flight, not Ethiad. Nothing is guaranteed with flights.

Especially on flights that are not on the same ticket.

Hi Mannej,

Thanks for your response. The tickets were booked direct from Hobart - one tcket, not two. DJ / VA were not aware I was flying in from Abu Dhabi. (seems Virgin & Velocity don't "speak")

The paid flights were with Etihad - who used Virgin as their partner from Hobart to Melbourne and return.

To me is looks like
2 tickets Hobart to Dublin return booked directly through Etihad with $ (1 PNR ?)
Put a claim in with your travel insurance:
Was your wife phone number / email in the Etihad reservation ?
Even though DJ canceled the Hobart flight, the 2 airline system may not electronically talk to each other.

1 ticket Hobart - Melb R/t paid with $$ and 1 MEL to Dublin r/t booked on DJ points (these must be separate bookings / PNRs)
For the 1 ticket the Hobart flight is nothing to do with Etihad.
They got you to MEL so you cannot claim $0.01 from Etihad
If you try to claim anything from Eithad they will rightfully decline.
Try Virgin, but a successful claim unlikely

If you mix costs & claims of the 2 different parties both likely to fail

When was the 9pm flight canceled? Whilst you were in the air or some time previous?

Hi Mwenenzi,

yes, my wife included her phone # in the reservation & well as her email address! I may have confused you. My wife & her mum's flights were booked with Etihad from Hobart - I was the one who used frequent flyer points. Virgin cancelled the flight - not my wife's concern, as Etihad accepted 100% of the total flight

Hi moa999,

Return flight was cancelled about 10 days before we left Australia. Virgin advised Etihad - Etihad did nothing about it

Best to edit our your details - PNR - tickets numbers

So why did you not then check your wife's - MIL tickets with Eitihad?
I note your wife MIL have Eithad flight numbers.

Did yours have Virgin and/or Etihad flight numbers?
I did realise your ticket was on DJ

As others have stated, I feel that your only recourse may be for the tickets issued for your wife and her mother.

Try your Travel Insurance.

As for your flights, you will not receive anything from Etihad, as your flights were on different tickets.

Sorry Mwenenzi - I don't follow
"Best to edit our your details - PNR - tickets numbers"??

mannej- as i have proven by posting them - the flights from Hobart were booked on one ticket with etihad - why do you doubt this?

mannej- I'm confused

ticket (singular) was purchased with etihad

you ask - "So why did you not check your wife's - MIL tickets with Eitihad?
Were tickets issued by Virgin or Etihad (Virgin or Eithad flight numbers)"

ticket(s) were issued by etihad. do you work for them?

So, what most people are telling me is that - you book direct with an airline from Hobart - they use a partner on the domestic section - the domestic partner cancels a flight, yet you have to pay for the overnight delay on the way home?

It is Eitihad problem for your wife & MIL
If your name is on the hotel invoice etc your wife has less chance getting any money back
If you trying to claim on Eitihad any costs you had they will fail
Best to claim on your wife's MIL's travel insurance

Your additional costs are nothing to do with Eithad.
Know one accepts consequential losses

There are 2 very distinct issues - claims here
A) your wife & MIL (with Eithad)
B) you (with Virgin)

But I can't see that Travel Insurance will pay out. The flights were changed 10 days out which necessitated an overnight connection, albeit one of the pax was not advised by Etihad, pax was aware.
This is not a misconnect situation.

If the 9pm flight had never existed, presumably the OP would have booked an overnight anyway.

Pax issue here is trying to get Etihad to pay for expenses for a rebooking that was not communicated.
