Hi all,

ive got a flight AUS-SYD via LAX. Same PNR. American and qantas call centres have quoted the prices from here and said we only have to pay the qantas charge (Pre Paid Additional Baggage | Qantas), however the sentence here:
"It is not available for flights operated by another carrier (such as codeshare or interline flights) or if you are connecting to/from a flight operated by another airline within 24 hours of your Qantas operated flight. The additional baggage rates of the operating airline applies in these instances"

makes me concerned that a) they won't accept our excess bags, or b) we'll have to pay AA fees for AUS-LAX and QFF fees SYD-LAX.

also- is there a limit to the number of excess bags you're allowed? The excess baggage charges appear cheaper than sending USPS so we're looking at bringing back 5+ bags of excess. I'm thinking we'll be allowed 5 excess bags max each plus the 2 allowed as normal baggage (based on point 3 here - Additional Baggage Terms and Conditions | Qantas)

Ps There is no option in manage my booking to pre-purchase the additional luggage that is mentioned in the above link.

ill be gold by the time of the flight if it makes a difference.

Any advice from those that have previously done something similar would be excellent

cheers

If your booking is for Oz->USA round trip then your first baggage allowance for the trip is your baggage allowance for the entire trip.

This is due to the USA DOT exemption of IATA resolution 302 - "Most Significant Carrier".

Now you are looking for additional baggage - I'm not sure how that will work.

I guess you'll just have to pay.

Other than that I really can't help you - maybe someone else can? (Less baggage is more in my book.:p)

Maybe some clarifications would assist.

How many flying, what is the weight of the bags and status as you are checking into Sydney? Also ticket you are travelling on, class and stated allowances

Where has the ticket started? USA to Australia or Australia to USA.

Its a USA ticketed and original departure point, flying discount/ sale Y.

2 flying- one of us is gold, the other bronze so stated allowances are 3* 23kg for gold and 2 * 23kg for bronze.

I know we'll be up for excess baggage charges, but I'm keen to confirm we'll actually be able to send excess bags and also hopefully avoid paying twice...

cheers

Who was the ticket ticketed by? AA or QF?

for those playing along at home the charges ended up at $120/bag as they were less than 50lbs/ 23kgs. didn't seem to matter that the first segment wasn't a qantas operated flight despite the wording on the qantas website.

hopefully this becomes a useful google search for someone in the future.

cheers
