Honesty really is the best policy to avoid being on this show (have seen it filming in MEL, SYD and AKL before).

Me: "here you are"
Officer: "What food are you declaring today sir?"
Me: "I have some candy from the US, chips, etc etc etc"
Officer: "Oh, not sure why you even bothered to declare it. Ahead and straight out please!"

It annoys me when I get that attitude from them.

The form doesn't say "Any food excluding American candy, chips and other confectionary", it says "Any food".

Having said that, after the two hours it took me to get through Sydney with food last time I've decided it's not worth it. I now make sure I never have stuff to declare.

I travel with a child so I always have snacks.

We always declare food stuffs.

Last time coming back into BNE we said we had some food and we had it all in a small esky and the border agent looked in the esky and said please proceed out as you have nothing to declare it was late and no more flights leaving.

Exactly, they want all food declared, they shouldn't then be turning around and telling you not to declare.

The cards have recently been updated to reflect the attitude, it says something along the lines of Meat, dairy, fruit, vegetables now.

It asks if you have "Meat, poultry, fish, seafood, eggs, dairy, fruit, vegetables"

The wording changed late last year, so I imagine the posting will be from the Nov/Dec time frame.

The bit that gets me is the fines for bringing food in, they are a joke couple hundred $, think Canada is $900.

Yeah sorry forgot to mention this was prior to the changes on the arrivals form (although now I probably have to declare my peanut butter M&M's as 'objectionable material' ).

The wording must have changed when the new duty limits came in. The old version most definitely did.

I noticed the wording had changed coming home in May. I had a stack of stuff - haggis chips, candy corn, African coffee beans etc. - and I was looking to declare this junk as food, just to be safe. I've seen the show. But I didn't have to. Saves everybody's time.

Haggis chips, just by the name alone it sounds like it should be declared. :mrgreen: A couple of years ago I returned with some durian chips from BKK. I had no interest in them but my boss at the time loved the stuff so I thought it would be a good gift.

I had declared them so no problems there but the trainee drug detector dog was very interested. The trailing officer asked me what I had, looked at it and after reviewing my declaration form said that he would advise the dog trainers. Thank you and good bye.

My boss and his wife loved them and I was well thanked and had a story to tell.

I had the pleasure of going to school with Grant Bowler (he was a couple of years behind me but in the same school House) - back then, you wouldn't have looked twice at him. Done very well for himself, great to see.

Always looked out for him and the crew in my infrequent Intl trips....

I think a lot of the time they must hang out more on the other side (the non Australia/NZ side), especially for the Quarantine parts of the show. The last two times I have arrived back from OS in Sydney (from ZQN in 2012, LAX in 2013), I was sent down the line when you go straight out.

When I arrived at AKL last year, they had the signs up saying that they were filming Border Patrol there. I thought I was a chance of getting on TV, especially when they sent me down the "everyone else" line. However, I didn't see any cameras.

You'd be disappointed. He simply overdubs the finished product and is never at the airport.
Its only a small independent crew of a producer, cameraman and sound guy who must do very well for themselves as they also film the footage for Highway Patrol, The Force, Skyways (or whatever it was called), etc. They do have a Customs media advisor from Canberra in attendance to tick off what they can and can't film though.
