Expiring IHG points - how to extend the date

I have some IHG points that will expire in May 2017. If I purchase points, will this extend the expiry date of the current points I hold?

The erewards points count towards status (as do transfers from VS). You will need 3K erewards points to make the transfer though

Virgin atlantic (its an Amex MR partner, transfers to IHG 1:1, I think minimum of 10k-expensive IHG points though)

Addit: amex to VS about 2 days, VS to IHG up to 30

For info. In my case the transfer from V Atlantic to IHG took 7 days. Amex to VS took 2 days
