Explorer and Platinum Edge sign up bonuses

I can see currently American Express is giving big sign up bonuses for the Platinum card (200k to 275k), Qantas card (100k) and Velocity card (100k). But why is there no juicy sign up bonus for the Platinum Edge or Explorer cards? These cards are better suited to general spenders who don't stay in expensive hotels, and don't want to be locked into spending travel credits on Qantas or Virgin.

You've answered your own question. Amex wants to acquire more customers that stay in expensive hotels and have other high levels of discretionary spending.
