I'm sure most of you know this, but booking Syd > Melb > LAX in J, I just got 40 SC to and from Melb, on top of the 160 SC each way for the Pacific leg. Plus the J fare from Sydney via Melb was well less than the Sydney direct. Just thought I'd share, since that is a handy number if you're low on re-qual.

That's 40 + 40, 160+ 160 = 400SC via Melb v. 320 direct from Syd.

No different with domestics, you can get more SC's by not flying direct.

As with all airlines, sometimes it can be cheaper by not flying direct IE as you did or domestically MEL - BNE - PER (instead of MEL - PER) which I have done (thankfully in J on a330 for BNE - PER)

Yes, I've done this with regards to domestic flights when visiting family in NSW, although I effectively have the choice of two "destinations" - i.e. either fly direct PER-SYD or for not much more, fly PER-SYD-CBR or PER-MEL-CBR and get extra SCs and eligible sectors. Dad lives on the South Coast anyway and picking up (and returning) a rental car in CBR - not to mention negotiating traffic! - is child's play compared to SYD, and the drive is shorter and easier as well.
